PRETTYMUCH Strip Things Back On Ed Sheeran-Penned “Summer On You”

PRETTYMUCH emerged as one of the most promising boy bands in recent memory last year, and they have extended their dominance into 2018. Since launching their careers with the nostalgia-inducing “Would You Mind,” they have explored a variety of pop’s sub-genres to great success. “Teacher” was a futuristic bop, and they teamed up with French Montana on the hip-hop sampling “No More.” The group showed off their vocal chops over an a cappella production on “Open Arms” and enjoyed a massive pop moment with “Healthy.” This year they dropped their PRETTYMUCH an EP, which contained several new tracks. And today (June 21), they hit on the sweet spot of acoustic pop with their Ed Sheeran co-penned “Summer On You.”

In an interview they described the track as being tailored for the summer. “It’s a song for like a campfire, very stripped back. It has a good summer vibe,” they said. And they weren’t wrong. Over acoustic strings, they woo a crush with plans for the future. “Baby, I ain’t got no money. All I got is time. And I’m gonna spend that time on you,” they sweetly croon on the chorus. However, they make a promise. “But when they pay me, and I can buy the sunshine, take you away. We’ll drink champagne while holed up in a room. And I’ll spend my summer on you.” PRETTYMUCH will take the stage at VidCon Saturday (June 23) to perform the single. If you aren’t in attendance, you can live-stream the event here.

All things considered, “Summer On You” could easily be a breakout moment for the quintet. The Steve Mac-produced anthem would sound perfectly at home on radio and picks up on some of the soulful energies of Justin Bieber’s indomitable “Love Yourself.” At the very least, it seems safe to assume that the group will make their debut on the Billboard Hot 100 this summer.
