The music world reacts to the death of 20-year-old rapper XXXTentacion.

The music world is still reeling from rapper XXXTentacion’s death. The 20-year-old was shot in a drive-by shooting in Miami, Florida on June 18. In the hours following the news, fans rushed to purchase and stream his music on streaming services and iTunes. As a result, his single “SAD!” soared up the Billboard Hot 100 and captured the number one spot. Moving upwards more than 50 places, he managed to hold off Cardi B, who was projected to claim her second chart topper with “I Like It.” He also landed three additional songs within the Top 20 as “Moonlight,” “Changes” and “Jocelyn Flores” reentered the chart. Today (June 28), the hitmaker’s team unveiled the official video for “SAD!,” and it seems eerily prophetic as he attends his own funeral.

In the JMP-directed release, the rapper introduces viewers to an otherworldly entity called Gekyume. The character’s name stems from a word of XXXTentacion’s own creation. On social media he defined it as being used to describe a higher state in the universe or thought. After a lengthy introduction, he attends a funeral for, and battles with, a former version of himself. His current self eventually overcomes the past version. Leaving the body behind, he returns to a dark room where he reflectively looks down at his hands. “You have done well at battling yourself. Your demons seem to honor your efforts. Are you satisfied,” the screen reads as things fade out. In the last three hours the visual has amassed more than 3.5 million streams. If things continue at this pace, XXXTentacion is sure to stay near the top of the charts next week.
