2018 has been a difficult year for Nicki Minaj. The rapper’s new era hasn’t exactly gone to plan and she seems to be losing ground against her main rivals. The 35-year-old is now catching heat online for collaborating with a convicted child sex offender. 6ix9ine (real name Daniel Hernandez) pleaded guilty to the use of a child in a sexual performance in 2015, but that hasn’t stopped his rapid ascent in the music world — cracking the top 20 last year with “Gummo.” His latest achievement is a co-sign from the Queen of Rap.

Their much-hyped collaboration, “Fefe,” arrived on Friday (July 20) and immediately cracked the iTunes top 5. The song got an unexpected burst of publicity when 6ix9ine was kidnapped, beaten and robbed a matter of days after the track’s debut. The rapper managed to escape and has used the incident to plug “Fefe” on his social channels. The video, which has racked up more than 12 million views in its first 24 hours, has sparked a controversy of its own. It finds the duo playing childhood games, which has been deemed unsavory given 6ix9ine’s criminal history. Time will tell if Nicki’s latest feature does more harm to her career than good.
