Zayn Malik’s sophomore LP is taking shape. And it may turn out to be one of the most eclectic offerings in recent memory. The 25-year-old has been slowly dropping tracks from the collection for the better part of a year, and each release is drastically different from the last. He kicked things off alongside Sia on “Dusk Till Dawn.” A soaring ballad that highlights the duo’s vocals, it broke into the Top 5 in the UK and just missed the Top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100. From there, he has explored a variety of sounds. “Let Me” is a saccharine R&B love song, while “Entertainer” channels Drake and puts more of a bad boy spin on his musicality. The “Pillowtalk” crooner dropped a handful of acoustic covers on YouTube (I highly recommend his take on Elvis’ “Can’t Help Falling In Love”) and most recently went full rock star on “Sour Diesel.” And he is not done yet. Yesterday (July 30), he revealed that his next single features Timbaland and is coming before the end of the week.

Called “Too Much,” the track drops Thursday (August 2). Based on a short preview the former boy bander posted online, it sounds like his latest release is going to be an emo banger. Over a bright production, he mourns what sounds like the end of a relationship. “Felt good, but now I feel bad. Like I know I can’t take it back. No there’s nothing I can say,” he sings in a sweet falsetto. The super-producer chimes in as well. “Most be an addiction. I wanted it all, didn’t expect it to fall,” he cryptically announces. Of all the tracks we have heard thus far, it sounds like “Too Much” may have the greatest potential on the charts. One thing the era has been missing is a surefire hit in the US. The crooner hasn’t cracked the Top 40 on the Hot 100 since “I Don’t Wanna Live Forever,” and he is due for a moment back on top. Get a taste of what to expect from “Too Much” below!
