Surf-rock god Cody Simpson loses his heart in the waves of a relationship on his new single, “Underwater.” The 21-year-old returns to the scene alongside his band, The Tide, after dropping last year’s impressive Wave One EP. Their latest is another breezy anthem that should rack up plenty of streams over the next few months. Over an infectious instrumental, the Aussie hitmaker prepares for an adventure with a lover he met in a bar. “Uncivilized islands are waiting outside of the bar,” he croons before making big moves on the sing-along chorus. “Cause I wanna go somewhere I know. Where we can take it slow. I wanna go, I wanna go,” he sings. Taking an audible breath, he dives even deeper into the potential romance. “I’m underwater ’cause I’m drowning in your body. Maybe we can leave this party. Take ya somewhere that I know.”

The Taylor Curran-directed video could easily go very viral. In it, Cody performs the single in front of a blue screen. Some creative lighting effects create the sense he is underwater, making for a truly striking look. However, the most impressive moments come during the chorus. At that moment, the camera moves away from the star and focuses on a couple dancing underwater. They gracefully cut through the currents, which draw them together before pushing them apart. The end result is truly a gorgeous, almost ghostly scene that is utterly captivating. As the video ends, it appears that Cody emerges from the water as well. “I beyond stoked to share my next single, ‘Underwater,’ with the world,” Cody said in a press release. “I’m taking a step in a new direction and it couldn’t feel better!”

With any luck, his latest will close out the summer by making a debut on the Billboard Hot 100. Give it a spin up top and revisit his Wave One standout “Waiting For The Tide” below!
