New Find: Laura Jean's 'Touchstone'
Laura Jean dabbles in synth-pop on 'Touchstone' and gets Lorde's seal of approval.

Joseph Luca needs to be on your radar. The newcomer got our attention earlier this year with debut single, “I’m Sorry,” and now follows it up with another gem called “Break My Back.” Falling somewhere between Prince and Gallant on the soulful pop scale, the 27-year-old stands out by incorporating a distinctly indie twist to the production — for starters, he plays every instrument on the record. While the lyrics seem very much related to bedroom activities, the CalArts alum was inspired to write it after literally breaking his back at EDC in Las Vegas.

“It’s about going that extra mile in the bedroom and letting go of all control,” Joseph reveals. “It’s a song I wrote after I did indeed break my back. And from that I learned how to turn something negative that happened into a positive.” There’s another aspect to the steamy anthem. “[It’s] a song about building trust with your romantic partner while embracing both sides of the spectrum of submission and dominance,” he elaborates. That taps into a major element of his music. “Men are commonly not in tune with the feminine side of themselves that exists whether they like it or not. I’m here to redefine everything a man can be and music is my weapon of choice.”
