Should Have Been Bigger: Dua Lipa’s “Blow Your Mind (Mwah)”
Dua Lipa solidified her status as an international sensation with “New Rules.” The plucky anthem topped charts across the globe and was a serious contender for the title of Song Of The Summer last year. Racking up more than one billion views, its accompanying video also went massively viral. But before it blew up, the 23-year-old dropped a handful of other singles that brimmed with just as much potential. Her debut release, “Be The One,” went Top 10 in the UK, and her anthemic “Hotter Than Hell” performed respectably. However, she missed out on a serious hit with 2016’s “Blow Your Mind (Mwah).”
The track saw Dua link up with Jon Levine and Lauren Christy. “We were like, “Why don’t we just write about being happy in your skin and being proud of who you are,” she told Genius about the release. The end result was a flirty bop with a playful message. Singing to a flame, she drops some feisty lines. “Tell me I’m too crazy. You can’t tame me, can’t tame me. Tell me I have changed, but I’m the same me, old same me inside,” the rising star chants over simmering beats. She hits peak levels of sassiness moving into the chorus.
“If we don’t fuck this whole thing up, guaranteed I can blow your mind,” she belts before signing off with a kiss. The infectious song served as Dua’s first official single in the US and resonated with promise. Kinga Burza signed on to direct the accompanying visual, which was a fashionable affair. In it the aspiring pop princess and a crew of girlfriends strutted across London’s Barbican Estate. Serving chic looks and posing with rainbow flags and signs reading “Dua For President,” it was a simple but striking offering. Dua’s star power was on full display, and it was evident that she was One To Watch.
The track seemed destined for big things. However, it never really picked up in the US. Despite going Top 30 in the UK, the Brit landed at number 72 on the Billboard Hot 100. Internationally the track also struggled to replicate the success of her previous releases. That didn’t stop the hitmaker’s ascent, though. Linking up with Martin Garrix on 2017’s “Scared To Be Lonely,” Dua landed another global hit. After hitting it big with “New Rules,” she continued her winning streak.
“IDGAF” went Top 3 in the UK, and her feature on Calvin Harris’ club-ready “One Kiss” is proving to be another worldwide success. She is bound to net yet another when Mark Ronson and Diplo drop their Silk City track, “Electricity.” In the long run, “Blow Your Mind (Mwah)” may not be one of her most commercially successful, but it remains a shimmering hit that highlighted her early potential.
