Christina Aguilera Covers ‘Cosmopolitan,’ Talks Touring & Britney Comparisons
Christina Aguilera graced the latest edition of Cosmopolitan with an interview and photoshoot. The 37-year-old is amping up the promo as she prepares to hit the road on The Liberation Tour next month. After covering a handful of publications earlier this year, her latest is a similarly stripped-back affair. Shot by Kai Z Feng, the “Fall In Line” siren stuns in a plunging white suit on the cover. In another photo from the pictorial, she poses in an oversized white jacket and serves a similarly fierce look. The accompanying feature includes some new details about her tour as well as insight into the natural style that she has embraced while promoting Liberation. “I still love getting glammed up, but I want to show imperfections on this go-round. It’s scary, but I’m up for the challenge,” she admitted.
As she prepares for her first headlining tour in years, she explained how she plans to bring her album to life on the road. “With this record, I’m stripping back a lot and just trying to find myself again—just the true love and the art in the process, and not just going for some formulaic sort of force-fed direction that we can get caught up in,” she said. “So I want to flip it on its ear and I want to do something completely unexpected from a pop-formatted show—a fresh perspective that I’ve never done this of a tour before—super creative, super interesting.” The “Accelerate” hitmaker has consistently switched things up over the course of her lengthy career. The decisions were not always warmly received by the press.
In the interview, she admitted that comparisons to Britney Spears around her Stripped era hurt. “It’s like, if I’m going to be demure and innocent, that’s okay. But if I’m going to just be myself, I’m trouble.” However, she recognized that her decisions at the time helped usher in a new age of female empowerment. “‘Dirrty’ was extremely controversial at the time, but it would be nothing now. I hope I paved the way and helped set the ground rules that women can be any version of themselves they wanna be…and proud of it.” The diva also jokingly opened up about why she could not date another celebrity. “I think that I can only handle one [celebrity] in the relationship, and I need to be it.”
