Should Have Been Bigger: Electrik Red’s Accurately-Titled “So Good”

Nicole Scherzinger's ''Whatever U Like'' deserved to be a massive hit.

Paying tribute to one song isn’t quite enough when it comes to Electrik Red. Their whole career should have been bigger. A product of the late ’00s explosion of girl groups that came in the wake of the Pussycat Dolls’ breakout success, Kyndra Reevey, Lesley Lewis, Naomi Allen and Sarah Rosete stood out with their sultry voices, slinky dance moves and striking good looks. They also arrived with a fully fledged, strikingly original sound courtesy of super producers The-Dream and Tricky Stewart.

Given those qualities, superstardom seemed like an inevitably. But their first single, “Drink In My Cup,” was a little too aggressive and, frankly, ahead of the curve for radio. It didn’t matter because the quartet’s next track was a no-brainer. Smooth and sexy, complete with a remix featuring the then-unstoppable Lil Wayne, “So Good” should have been a smash. The production is immaculate and the ladies brought it vocally and visually (see both versions of the video below). Unfortunately, it didn’t connect because everything is awful.

Electrik Red’s debut LP, How To Be A Lady: Volume 1, eventually dropped in 2009 and peaked at number 100 on the Billboard 200. They have been working on the followup ever since, but with the exception of a couple of leaked tracks, nothing has come of it. They deserved better and “So Good” should be remembered as one of the better R&B singles of the late ’00s. Revisit the track, and listen to their underrated album, below.
