Janet Jackson is soaring high in 2018. The living legend returned to the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time since 2015 with the release of her Daddy Yankee-assisted “Made For Now.” The anti-FOMO anthem has amassed nearly 4 million streams on Spotify, and it landed at the number 88 spot on the charts in its first week. It fell back off the charts this week, but with the right promotional push it could rebound. She gave the anthem some light promo by featuring it in a Michael Jackson tribute video last week. Celebrating her brother’s 60th birthday, she put a fresh spin on his iconic “Remember The Time” video. And today (September 5) she is landing even more headlines for gracing the latest edition of InStyle with a new photoshoot. Shot by Robbie Fimmano, she keeps things fresh-faced and radiant on the cover.

The remaining photos from the spread are equally stylish. Posing in a variety of settings, the hitmaker epitomizes all things chic. Speaking to Laura Brown for the accompanying interview, Janet dropped a couple of interesting notes about her life and legacy. The superstar reflected on her youth, when she balanced her budding stardom with chores at home. “[Those chores] kept us grounded. Taking the trash out late at night. We did it all [while] singing. We would make up songs. I had to stand on top of a swivel chair in order to do the dishes because I was so short.”

She also reflected on how the industry has changed for the better since her earliest days. “I remember growing up and being in this business was always this important thing. Because it was the thing. And you had to be a certain size, you had to be thin to be an entertainer. Stupid crap like that. That’s just this business I’m in. I think it’s changed, thank God. People are more accepting of others. Which is the way it should’ve been from the jump.” She added that these expectations led to some insecurities that she had to battle. One example was that she had to learn to love her body and realize that there is more than one sort of beauty.

“A lot of it has to do with experience, getting older. Understanding, realizing that there isn’t just one thing that is considered beautiful. Beautiful comes in all shapes, sizes, and colors.” When asked if she had any advice for the current crop of up-and-comers, Janet shared some earnest wisdom. “It’s tough. They have to know who they have to be and who they are. Not what someone else wants them to be, not what they think they should be by looking at someone else,” she explained. “Individuality is beautiful. God made you as you are, and that’s beautiful. You are unique, special. You don’t want to look like someone else or be that other person.”

The icon dropped a couple other gems in the interview. She reflected on motherhood, touring and also talked about some sweet treats that she grew to love in adulthood (she had her first KitKat a couple years ago).
