Rapper Mac Miller has passed away at the age of 26 following a reported overdose. TMZ reported that police responded to a 911 call at his San Fernando Valley home around noon PT. He was pronounced dead at the scene. US Weekly confirmed the news in a separate post. Representatives of the rapper and his family have not yet released a statement or confirmed the news. The musician has been engaged in an ongoing battle with substance abuse problems.

Earlier this year he was involved in a car crash in the San Fernando Valley. He reportedly drove his car into a pole and fled the scene. However, he confessed to the crime when police traced the car to his home. Mac addressed the accident in an interview with Zane Lowe on Beats 1. “Yeah I made a stupid mistake. I’m a human being. Like drove home drunk. But it was the best thing that could have happened. Best thing that could have happened. I needed that. I needed to run into that light pole and literally like have the whole thing stop,” he said.

Last month he unveiled his fifth album, Swimming, to strong reviews. It debuted at the number 3 spot on the Billboard 200 and spawned a handful of singles. He had plans to embark on a supporting tour, which was scheduled to begin in October.

This is a breaking story that will be updated as it continues to develop.

Update: Mac’s family released a statement concerning the news. ““Malcolm McCormick, known and adored by fans as Mac Miller, has tragically passed away at the age of 26,” they said in a statement shared Rolling Stone. “He was a bright light in this world for his family, friends and fans. Thank you for your prayers. Please respect our privacy. There are no further details as to the cause of his death at this time.”
