Imagine Dragons Drop “Zero” From ‘Ralph Breaks The Internet’
The hits show no sign of drying up for Imagine Dragons. The chart-conquering rockers, who are currently sitting at number one on iTunes with “Natural,” unleashed their next smash this morning (September 19). “Zero” is taken from the soundtrack of upcoming animated movie Ralph Breaks The Internet and it finds the quartet at their most pop. In fact, the upbeat ’80s vibe might be something of a culture shock to longtime fans, but is perfect for a movie aimed at kids and still manages to address a serious issue.
“It’s a pretty timely movie in a lot of ways in that it addresses some of the issues of identity and loneliness unique to this internet generation,” lead singer Dan Reynolds says in the press release. “Ralph’s internal struggle for self-acceptance really resonated with us, and this song speaks to that.” That really comes through in the chorus, which is a lot darker than standard cartoon fare. “Let me tell you what it’s like to be a zero (zero), let me show you what it’s like to always feel (feel),” Dan belts. “Like I’m empty and there’s nothing really real.”
That juxtaposition of light and dark was intentional. “The song is a dichotomy in some ways, with sometimes heavy lyrics over pretty upbeat instrumentation,” the frequently-shirtless frontman continues. “The result is a tone that is somewhat bittersweet, which felt appropriate given the complexity of Ralph as a character.” Listen to “Zero” below.
