The Drop: Alec Benjamin & Zhavia
Your guide to New Music Friday featuring gems from Alec Benjamin and Zhavia.

Nostalgia has played a key role in pop music this year. Many of the industry’s brightest stars traveled back in time for inspiration. Cher, Anne-Marie, Charli XCX and Troye Sivan explored the trend with strong results. Rising star Alec Benjamin does the same on new single, “1994.” Since returning to the scene with his gut-wrenching “Let Me Down Slowly” this May, the 24-year-old has been on a hot streak. And his latest, which revisits the year he was born, is no exception. Looking back on life through the veil of experience, Alec sings about how his perception has changed.

“I guess Santa Claus is just not real and Batman can’t fly. And nobody’s invincible because I know people die,” the singer/songwriter admits. He imparts some wisdom on the track as well. “Now tell me what you wanna be because you grow up too fast,” Alec urges. “And go be who you wanna be, wanna be, wanna be.” Built around a simple chorus, “1994” is another taste of the breakout star’s straightforward pop sensibilities. He has surely established himself as One To Watch, and the November 16 release of Narrated For You cannot come soon enough. Before then, the Phoenix-born singer will embark on a sold-out tour of North America. Early next year, he turns his attention to Europe and the UK.
