Elton John highlighted his youthful spirit with a cover of Khalid’s “Young Dumb & Broke” for Spotify Singles. The living legend is the latest artist to partake in the service’s popular series. For it, participating acts record a live rendition of one of their singles and a cover. Released today (December 12), the crooner delivered an updated take on his 1974 classic “Bennie And The Jets.” The new performance is a testament to the sing-along anthem’s incredible longevity. All these years later, it is still a bop. However, his cover is where things get particularly interesting. The 71-year-old put his own spin on the 2017 smash with his sharp delivery. He also called on a feature from Khalid himself to close out the new version.

Khalid’s velvety vocals are as strong as ever, and it is interesting to hear the twosome on a track together. Elton John opened up about his appreciation for the up-and-comer in a press release. “I discovered Khalid’s music a few years ago, and have been a fan ever since,” he explained. “We finally met when I played his home town of El Paso last year. It’s a thrill to be a small part of any new artists’ journey, and it’s been wonderful to see his star continue to rise and rise. ‘Young Dumb & Broke’ is a fabulous song, one of my favorites and I’m really pleased that he liked my cover enough to contribute vocals.” Press play below get a taste of the unexpected meeting of pop minds.
