Sam Smith and Normani just delivered one of the first genuinely great songs of 2019. After weeks of teasing on social media, the hitmakers got around to dropping their much-anticipated “Dancing With A Stranger” today (January 11). Linking up over a slinky production, the pair search for a respite from heartbreak on the dance floor. “I don’t wanna be alone tonight. It’s pretty clear that I’m not over you,” Sam admits on the opening lines. “I’m still thinking ’bout the things you do.” Normani echoes that sentiment on her verse. “I wasn’t even going out tonight. But, boy, I need to get you off my mind. I know exactly what I have to do.” Things truly take off on the chorus.

“Look what you made me do. I’m with somebody new. Oh baby, baby, I’m dancing with a stranger.” Vocals are undeniably served, especially when Sam and Normani come together for some sweet harmonies. More importantly, they expertly capture the frustration and loneliness of heartbreak, bottling it and presenting it as something both deeply personal and infinitely relatable. I wouldn’t be surprised to see this imitate the success of “Love Lies” and propel the duo back into the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100. With any luck, a video will arrive in the near future. Based on a teaser the prolific Brit posted on Instagram, something has already been shot, and it looks like a serious blockbuster is on the way.

In the meantime, press play on the lovelorn anthem below!
