FLETCHER’s “Undrunk” Is A Brutally Honest Breakup Song
FLETCHER burst onto the music scene in 2016 with organic pop anthems like “War Paint” (still a boot-scootin’ bop) and “Live Young Die Free.” Over the next couple of years, the 24-year-old tinkered with her sound — introducing sleepy synths and minimal hip-hop beats on 2017’s “You Should Talk.” Her new single, “Undrunk,” falls somewhere in the middle of that spectrum. Malay has an innate hip-hop sensibility (after all, he is Frank Ocean’s go-to producer), but the sound palette is lush and largely acoustic. It’s the perfect middle ground.
“I start touching myself to the photos that you used to send me, I should have deleted but kept it a secret,” FLETCHER admits in an early verse. “Is that crazy to do?” (I think she knows the answer). From there, our heroine slowly unravels until reaching the point of wanting to delete the entire relationship. “Wish I could get a little un-drunk, so I could un-call you at five in the morning,” she laments on the catchy chorus. “I would un-fuck you, but some things you can’t undo.” Yep, love definitely sux.
