‘Schitt’s Creek’ Star Annie Murphy Saves Pop With “A Little Bit Alexis”

Dance-pop really peaked in the ’00s, a fact Annie Murphy acknowledges on “A Little Bit Alexis.” The Canadian comedienne performed the mock banger on last night’s episode of Schitt’s Creek (AKA the best show on television and/or Netflix) and then kindly chose to release the full version. The song sounds like a cross between Hoku and Heidi Montag, and is supposed to originate from her character’s scrapped 2007 reality show. Which is an Emmy-worthy idea that demands its own spinoff.

“A Little Bit Alexis” takes us back to a time when (rice) paper-thin voices wafted over tinny dance beats, and pop stars looked like coked-up socialites without stylists. As expected, the lyrics are hilarious (“Hide your diamonds, hide your exes,” Annie sings on the chorus, “I’m a little bit Alexis!”) and the production sounds like a badly pirated demo of a Pussycat Dolls B-side. I’m just upset we didn’t get a video. I’m imagining Lindsay Lohan’s “Rumors” filmed on a cell phone. See the cover and fall in love with Annie’s pop-saving bop below.
