You might remember Catie Turner as The Quirky One from season 16 of American Idol. She went viral with a cover of Camila Cabello’s “Havana” and teamed up with Katy Perry for a stripped-back reimagining of “Part Of Me.” Since the show ended, the 18-year-old has been honing her craft. Catie dropped an independently-released single called “21 Century Machine” in 2018, racking up more than one million streams. The Pennsylvania native now returns to New Music Friday with “Prom Queen,” an anthem for wallflowers and outsiders.

“Two girls walk into a party, the one who gets noticed isn’t me,” Catie laments over plucked guitar strings. “It’s a terrible feeling being the ghost on the wall that’s always disappearing, because I want to be something to someone.” The chorus is even less upbeat. “Burn the sash and smash the tiara,” she sings. “No, that’s not me, I’ll never be prom queen.” Depressing as it is relatable, “Prom Queen” signals the singer/songwriter as One To Watch. And happily, she’s going to have her moment in the spotlight via a virtual prom. Check out Catie’s socials for more information and listen to her very, very good new single below.
