Album Review: Rita Ora's 'Phoenix'
The pop star's long-delayed sophomore LP was well and truly worth the wait.

Rita Ora’s Phoenix was one of my favorite albums of 2018. At a time when pop is moving towards minimal beats and plodding mid-tempos, the Brit delivered a collection of full-blooded bops. It’s hard to pick a favorite song, but “Only Want You” would definitely be in the mix. The 28-year-old wisely selects the unusually adult banger (it’s about the search for a meaningful relationship) as her next single. In a bid to appeal to the US market, the track now features Atlanta rapper 6LACK.

I have to admit that I wasn’t thrilled about the prospect of “Only Want You” being tarnished by a lazy verse, but 6LACK’s smooth slow is perfect for the song. “She don’t want a remix, she want the OG,” he spits. “She told me she love the new me and the old me.” The “Waves” collaborator then reassures Rita that he’s there to stay. “Down, and I promise its gon’ stay that way.” Awww. “Let You Love Me” came agonizingly close to clicking in the US. Hopefully, this will do even better. Listen below.
