We speak to the breakout star about coming out, being authentic and her sophomore LP.

After breaking big in 2016 with smash hits “Hide Away” and “Sit Still, Look Pretty,” Daya took a break to find herself. “I got to reflect on who I am and who I want to be to the world,” the 20-year-old told me last year. “I think that was the most crucial step in my career… to take a step back and recognize those things. Because if I’m not authentic to me, then how is anyone supposed to connect with me?” Shortly thereafter, she cut her hair and came out in a thoughtful Instagram post.

Daya is now ready to introduce her true self to the world via a new single called “Insomnia.” Co-written with J Kash and Michael Pollack, the Oscar Görres-produced bop arrives on Friday (March 8). It’s the first taste of her sophomore LP, which promises to be full of surprises. “I would say it’s definitely more experimental than my first album,” the hitmaker revealed. “I wrote every single song on this new album alongside some great songwriters and producers. It’s definitely more in line with what I want to sound like sonically.”
