Britney Spears’ Iconic Discography Inspires New Musical ‘Once Upon A One More Time’

It’s musical-ney, bitch. Britney Spears is currently in the midst of an indefinite professional hiatus. However, fans will have a new opportunity to engage with her iconic discography in an unexpected way in the very near future. Today (March 12), we learned that some of her biggest hits and a collection of beloved hidden gems will soundtrack a new musical. The show, titled Once Upon A One More Time, is due to premiere at the James M. Nederlander Theater in Chicago later this fall. It will run there through December 1 with goals of transitioning to Broadway in the near future.

The New York Times broke the news and shared some details about the plot. Although the musical will be comprised of 23 of Brit’s songs, the actual storyline centers on a different blonde princess – Cinderella. Bookwriter Jon Hartmere spilled the tea. “Cinderella is having an existential crisis, and she has a posse of famous princesses, and her stepmother is the main antagonist,” he explained. That’s not all, though. “There’s also Prince Charming and a dwarf we’ve never met — the eighth dwarf — and a narrator who is unhappy his system is being dismantled before his eyes.”

Other princesses to feature in the musical include Snow White, Rapunzel and Sleeping Beauty. And there will be a feminist spin with Betty Friedan’s classic “The Feminine Mystique” providing additional inspiration. Preparation for the show is well underway. Several readings have already taken place, and the “Slumber Party” legend was in attendance for one. She opened up about the project in a quote shared with Broadway World.

“I’m so excited to have a musical with my songs – especially one that takes place in such a magical world filled with characters that I grew up on, who I love and adore,” she gushed. “This is a dream come true for me!” While we wait for the show to premiere, join us in revisiting one of Britney’s hits that is sure to make the final cut.
