2019 is shaping up to be a massive year for Lizzo. The 31-year-old broke into the Top 10 on the Billboard 200 and netted rave reviews with last month’s Cuz I Love You. Not only that, but she landed a breakout hit with the rip-roaring “Juice” and made her debut on the Billboard Hot 100 with “Truth Hurts.” As of today (May 15) she’s got yet another hit on her hands with the unveiling of her Charli XCX collab “Blame It On Your Love.” She also stars in a gorgeous spread for Essence magazine. Shot by JD Barnes, the diva looks like a literal goddess in a series of pastel-hued outfits.

In the accompanying interview, Lizzo spills some tea about the main audience for her music. “These songs are for my big Black girls. Everyone can enjoy them, but I want to help us,” she said. “This music is medicine and I’m trying to get it to my sisters. It’s so exciting to me to finally be at a level where I have exposure to my Black sisters, my big sisters, my Black trans sisters.” She also shared some insight into the creation of her self-love anthem “Soulmate” and deciding to stay utterly true to herself.
