Melanie Teases Sophomore LP, 'K-12'
Melanie Martinez teases her long-awaited sophomore LP in a series of quirky videos.

Melanie Martinez will release her long-awaited sophomore LP on September 6 — four years after debuting with the platinum-selling Cry Baby. The 24-year-old revealed the release date of K-12 at the end of a new video teaser that finds her smoking a joint and talking about past lives with a classmate. In fact, it looks like the album’s entire aesthetic is based on Cry Baby’s (AKA Melanie’s toddler alter-ego) school adventures. September 6 isn’t exactly around the corner, but we are just about due for the lead single.

When I spoke with Melanie way back in 2015, she revealed that her sophomore LP would be another concept album that picks up where Cry Baby left off. A lot of time has passed since then, but the K-12 trailers suggest that we are indeed getting a continuation of her debut album. It’s also very possible that Melanie is releasing another visual album. The “Pity Party” hitmaker promised a full-length film in 2017, which could help explain the lengthy delay. See the pastel-hued, typically quirky announcement video below.
