Maggie Lindemann’s debut album is shaping up to be one of the year’s most intriguing projects. So far, the 20-year-old served pure pop on “Obsessed,” stripped it back on “Human” and dabbled in (deeply personal) balladry on “Would I.” And then she switched it up again by channeling a young Gwen Swefani on the ska-infused “Friends Go.” The budding pop star unveils the video today (May 29), and it’s a uniquely cinematic adventure. Maggie plays the third wheel to an annoyingly loved-up couple and experiences a lot of car trouble.

“My goal is making a video feel bigger than life, something that you’d only see in a movie theatre,” director Van Alpert explains. “I wanted the car to be a representation of Maggie’s heart. The car crashing, bouncing and exploding in artistic ways gives you an overall feeling of excitement. When you lose your mind from being excluded from your friends or love, your heart goes through it, just like the car.” So there you have it. “Friends Go” is a bop and deserves your full attention.
