UPDATE: Lil Nas X’s 7 EP is here. Stream the collection in full (including a collaboration with Cardi B) below.

Lil Nas X is without doubt one of the biggest breakout stars of 2019. The Atlanta artist caught lightning in a bottle with his debut single “Old Town Road.” The country-trap fusion is relentlessly catchy and was already creating plenty of buzz when Billy Ray Cyrus signed on for a remix. It’s only gotten bigger since then. The track has dominated the Billboard Hot 100 for the last 11 weeks. Today (June 20), he returns with his new single “Panini” ahead of the release of his first-ever EP 7 (that drops tomorrow). And it sounds like another hit.

In an interview with Beats 1, Lil Nas X explained that the song’s title comes from a character in a cartoon called Chowder. Why? Because he relates her personality to his relationship with some of his earliest fans. This one moves away from the twang of “Old Town Road.” However, it’s just as instant. Over a production courtesy of Take A Daytrip, the hitmaker lays down some slick verses. “Ayy, Panini, don’t you be a meanie. Thought you wanted me to go up, why you tryna keep me teeny,” he asks.

Everything builds up to the chorus, where he asks for some clarity. “Just say to me what you want from me,” he pleads. And it turns out that Lil Nas X is already thinking about a remix for “Panini.” Who does he want to recruit this time around? That would be Drake. Sounds like a solid choice. Press play on the track below while we wait for the rest of 7 to arrive.
