It’s not long now until BANKS graces us with her new album. The 31-year-old will drop her aptly titled third LP III Friday (July 12). But luckily we don’t have to wait that long for another taste of the tracklist. Today she rolled out “Contaminated” as her latest buzz track. And it is yet more evidence that the forthcoming collection will be a sublime work of art. Produced by BJ Burton, the haunting track depicts a relationship at its breaking point. “And I wish we could change it,” she laments on the chorus.

But there is no happy ending in sight. “We’re always gonna be contaminated. And oh, I know what we need. You start letting me go. Our love is tainted.” BANKS opened up about the song in a press release. “‘Contaminated’ is about being addicted to a toxic relationship. The more you give, the less of yourself you become,” she explained. It’s a stark thematic shift from the self-assured lead single “Gimme.” However, it vibes nicely with the equally gut-wrenching second single “Look What You’re Doing To Me.”

At this rate, III is going to be one of the most captivating releases of the year. While we wait for it to arrive in full, press play on “Contaminated” below.
