Terry Crews Stars In Brittany Howard’s Moving “Stay High” Video

As the voice of Alabama Shakes, Brittany Howard carved out a reputation as one of music’s premiere blues/rock artists. (Four Grammy awards already adorn her mantelpiece). The 30-year-old’s profile will only grow with the arrival of Jaime, her long-awaited solo debut LP, on September 20. After whetting our appetite with “History Repeats,” she unveils “Stay High” — a sugary sweet love song that doubles as a love letter to her hometown and family. That really comes through in the Kim Gehrig-directed video, which stars Terry Crews.

“This video is shot in my home town of Athens, Alabama,” Brittany reveals. “The actors are my family and friends.” She just needed someone to assume the role of her father and one man sprang to mind. “Terry Crews plays a man who isn’t out to change the world, he plays a man who just wants to come home to those who understand and love him best,” she explains. “We see his inner beauty, grace and humanity in a place that is so often misunderstood.” How did it all come together? Well, the Alabama Shakes hitmaker sent an email.

“I got an email from the Brittany Howard,” Terry recalls. “[She asked] me to be a part of a song she wrote that was all about her dad and how special he was to the family. And she poured her heart out in this letter. I couldn’t believe it.” You can watch the moving video below. Be sure to pre-order Jaime and check out dates for Brittany’s upcoming solo tour here. It’s going to be a very hot ticket.
