Taylor Swift’s ‘Lover’ Begins Taking Shape With “The Archer”

Today (July 23) is shaping up to be a big day for Taylor Swift. She kicked things off by learning that she was nominated for 10 awards at the 2019 MTV VMAs. The “You Need To Calm Down” star is in the running for some of the night’s highest honors including Video Of The Year and Song Of The Year. But that’s not all. After the news broke, she hopped on Instagram Live to share more details about her forthcoming album Lover. Beaming in from the set of a music video, she opened up about the four different deluxe editions of the LP.

Each version includes scans of 30 pages from her personal diaries. They also come with a blank journal for fans to fill out themselves. US fans can pre-order the deluxe editions on Target here. She also graced us with the heavily teased Track 5 off the album – “The Archer.” There is a catch though; this isn’t the next single. Taylor said there wouldn’t be a video and instead described it as “a glimpse into another side of the album.”

“With this album, like I’ve told you before, it’s the most songs I’ve put on an album,” she said. “So there’s a lot that’s covered emotionally.” She also explained the sentimental value of track 5 on her albums. “Track 5 is kind of a tradition that really started with you guys. Because I didn’t realize I was doing this. But as I was making albums, I don’t know why, but instinctively I was just kind of putting a very vulnerable, personal, honest, emotional song as Track 5.” The tradition holds up with “The Archer.”

Co-produced and -written with Jack Antonoff, the track is a lush and romantic anthem. “I’ve been the archer. I’ve been the prey. Screaming who could ever leave me, darling. But who could stay,” Taylor coos over graceful synths. “You could stay,” she adds later. Simple but gorgeous, this is possibly my favorite song off the album so far.
