The Swedish pop star's new album contains collabs with ALMA and Kylie Minogue.

Swedes just do pop and impossible-to-assemble furniture better. Take Winona Oak. Signed to Neon Gold (the home of Tove Lo, MARINA and Christine And The Queens), the Sollerön native is poised to be one of the breakout stars of 2019. “He Don’t Love Me” established the newcomer’s gloomy electro-aesthetic, but “Break My Broken Heart” ups the ante. While adjectives like “icy” and “glacial” are often bandied about to describe Scandinavian pop, there’s nothing cold and distant about Winona’s willingness to get her heart stomped on. Again.

“Fools falling in the dark like crazy, you know nothing you can do will save me,” she sings on the majestic chorus. “No, might as well break my broken heart.” If Lana Del Rey grew up on a steady diet of Robyn, it might sound a little something like this. Why is our heroine rushing towards self-destruction? “You have to be brave to love someone with all your heart,” Winona explains. “But the biggest risk in life is to not take any risks at all. As long as we’re breathing, what’s one more scar?” Watch the Andreas Öhman-directed video below.
