Taylor Swift Gets Romantic On Stripped-Back Ballad “Lover”
Taylor Swift’s Lover is shaping up to be the most eclectic album of her career. After introducing the opus with the sing-along, bubblegum-pop of “ME!,” the superstar took aim at haters on the super slick “You Need To Calm Down.” That was followed by an ’80s-referencing synth-pop anthem called “The Archer” and, now, the stripped-back title track. “Lover” is a throwback of sorts to the wide-eyed, romantic balladry of Fearless and Speak Now. “We can leave the Christmas lights up ’til January,” she begins the song. “This is our place, we make the rules.”
“There’s a dazzling haze, a mysterious way about you dear,” Taylor sings over an acoustic, waltz-like arrangement. “Have I known you twenty seconds or twenty years?” The 29-year-old really opens up on the chorus. “Can I go where you go? Can we always be this close forever and ever?” she pleads. “And I take me out and take me home, you’re my, my, my, my lover.” All of the songs from Lover have been good, but this is probably my favorite. Few artists can rival Taylor’s pen game when she’s dissecting matters of the heart and this is especially well observed. Fall in love with “Lover” below.
