EDIT: The post has been updated with Celeste’s haunting “Strange” video. Watch it below.

Celeste caught everyone’s attention in 2018 with jazz-tinged delights like “Both Sides Of The Moon” and “Father’s Son.” Officially deemed One To Watch by music’s most eagle-eyed tastemakers, the UK chanteuse returns today (September 4) with a new single called “Strange.” And it’s an instantly intoxicating, slightly eerie torch song. “Isn’t it strange? I am still me, you are still you,” she ponders over piano keys and silky strings on the chorus. “Isn’t it strange how people can change from strangers to friends, friends into lovers and strangers again?”

It turns out the song was inspired by the wildfires that swept through California in 2018. “I began to think of all the destruction the fires caused, the loss, the isolation, people finding themselves in a situation where they have no home, no sense of familiarity,” she says, recalling her reaction to seeing plumes of smoke from the freeway. “In the first verse I talk about the breakdown of certain relationships, when the burning passion or the fire goes out and you’re left with the remnants of smoke and ash.” In many ways, witnessing the devastation helped the singer/songwriter access certain emotions.

“Although the news about the fire wasn’t the direct inspiration for the song, it… opened me up to my own personal experiences of loss,” Celeste confides. Listen to her strikingly beautiful new single below.
