Freddie Mercury’s Moving “Love Me Like There’s No Tomorrow” Video

Interest in Freddie Mercury surged in the wake of Bohemian Rhapsody. The Queen biopic was a box office phenomenon (it grossed close to one billion dollars worldwide) and brought the legendary rock band’s music to a whole new generations of fans. The Academy Award-winning film also shined a light on Freddie’s ill-fated solo career, which might have been judged a little too harshly. Particularly when you hear gut-wrenching 1985 ballad “Love Me Like There’s No Tomorrow.” Today (September 5), on what would have been the rock icon’s 73rd birthday, it gets an animated video.

“We wanted to tell a story that was relevant to Freddie’s life, but not explicitly about him,” directors Esteban Bravo and Beth David say of the visual. “The AIDS crisis of the 1980s is a huge part of LGBT+ history, and it’s something that we knew needed to be handled with care.” They attempted (successfully, it turns out) to turn the science of the HIV/AIDS virus into something beautiful. “In researching [the virus] and the way it affects the body’s immune system, we were inspired to take a look at the story through a more microscopic lens.”

“It is a love story between two white blood cells, one of which has become infected by the virus,” the directors continue. “This perspective gave us a more direct visual representation of our conflict, which allowed us to explore the more nuanced struggles the characters face in their relationship with each other, their perceptions of themselves, and society’s perception, bias, and neglect of them.” The ballad is part of an upcoming boxset of Freddie’s solo material called Never Boring (out October 11).

It includes three CDs (including a compilation of his greatest solo performances), a Blu-ray and DVD featuring 13 promo videos and a hardback book full of photos.
