Halsey Introduces New Album ‘Manic’ With “Graveyard”

Halsey’s new era has officially begun. The 24-year-old introduced her third LP Manic by painting the album art on YouTube. Then, at the stroke of midnight ET, she unveiled her new single “Graveyard.” And it’s the exact opposite of what you’d expect after the ferocious growl of “Nightmare.” Instead of continuing exploring those sonics, her latest moves in a different direction. Laying her voice over a lush pop production courtesy of Jon Bellion, Louis Bell, Ojivolta and The Monsters & Strangerz, the “Without Me” chart-topper dissects matters of the heart with a perilously sharp knife.

“It’s crazy when the thing you love the most is the detriment. Let that sink in,” she realizes on the opening lines. “You can think again when the hand you wanna hold is a weapon. And you’re nothing but skin” Halsey reveals just how far she’s fallen on the chorus. “I would’ve followed all the way, no matter how far. I know when you go down all your darkest roads, I would’ve followed all the way to the graveyard.” And she’s not done digging until she hits the bridge. “It’s funny how the warning signs can feel like they’re butterflies.” I’m going to need a moment after that one.

Self-aware, vulnerable and very relatable, this is easily one of my favorite Halsey songs. Bellion’s DNA is all over the production, which is a breath a fresh air paired with the heavier lyrics. With any luck, it will steadily climb the charts in the coming weeks. If nothing else it has me even more excited to hear the rest of the new album, which arrives January 17, 2020.
