The Drop: Charlotte Lawrence & LANY
Your guide to New Music Friday featuring gems from Charlotte Lawrence and LANY.

Charlotte Lawrence has been pegged as One To Watch since bursting on to the scene with independently-released gems like “Sleep Talking,” “Just The Same” and (my favorite) “Stole Your Car.” The 19-year-old made her major label debut via Atlantic/Gold Tooth Records earlier this year with “Why Do You Love Me.” Which was a very good pop song, but some of the rawness and oddball flourishes of Charlotte’s earlier material were MIA. Happily, they are back for the gloriously gloomy and grandiose “Navy Blue.”

“Conversations in the silence, words are violent and the feeling’s dying slow,” the rising star sings over a bare-bones guitar arrangement. “We don’t even try to hide it, it’s like we like it.” The song completely switches gears on the chorus. “Don’t say the words we know are true, just one more night’s not much to lose,” Charlotte coos, before synths coming crashing down. “Pretend that I’m not wrong for you, just one more night in navy blue.” Co-written with heavy-hitters like Ryan Tedder, Ali Tamposi and Charlie Puth, this could be the teenager’s breakthrough hit.
