Aussie newcomer Evie Irie ranks as one of 2019’s breakout pop artists courtesy of her debut EP, 5 Weeks In LA. Which was literally recorded on a month-long trip to LA that earned her a deal with Republic Records. Each song on the EP demands your full attention, but “The Optimist” stands out as the most anthemic. “Lately it’s been a little bit wild, I wake up wearing this disgusting smile,” the 16-year-old belts over strummed guitar and wobbly synths. “It’s like I hear a parade outside my window, every day down my street when it used to be a shit show.”

“I’m shutting down the negativity,” she sings on the chorus. “I’ll find the optimist in me.” That theme of doggedly changing your perspective is reflected in the video. In it, a child shuts out the chaos around her with the help of an old walkman. Evie also makes a cameo, strumming her guitar in an adjacent motel room. It turns out, the talented teenager was inspired by a quote from Les Misérables. “Even the darkest night will end and the sun will rise,” Victor Hugo mused. To which she humbly adds: “Try and always be ‘The Optimist.’

We’re very excited to premiere Evie’s new video below.
