Lewis Capaldi Releases Poignant New Single “Before You Go”
Lewis Capaldi is arguably the breakout star of the year thanks to the worldwide success of “Someone You Loved.” The Brit’s brutal ballad is currently enjoying its third week at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, which makes it the perfect time to release the deluxe (or extended) edition of Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent. Of the three new songs on the album, “Before You Go” is the first to arrive. And, you might have guessed from the 23-year-old’s other material, the subject matter is a little grim.
Produced by TMS, “Before You Go” deals with the emotional aftermath of suicide. “I fell by the wayside like everyone else, I hate you, I hate you, I hate you but I was just kidding myself,” Lewis begins the song. “All I hear are the words that I needed to say.” He poses a poignant question on the chorus. “So, before you go,” the hitmaker growls. “Was there something I could’ve said to make your heart beat better?” It turns out, the track was inspired by the death of a family member.
“When I was about five or six I think, my aunt committed suicide,” Lewis told Zane Lowe on Apple Music’s Beats 1. “[I recently spoke] to my mum about… her feelings about going through that sort of rigmarole in your head of, ‘What could I have done here? Could I have done anything?'” He then spoke about the different stages of grieving. “You’re obviously upset and then you kind of get angry at them, and then you get angry at yourself.” Listen to “Before You Go” below.
