The Weeknd's 'Starboy': Album Review
Hit or miss? We review The Weeknd's much-hyped 'Starboy' LP.

EDIT: The post has been updated with The Weeknd’s “Heartless” video. Watch the Vegas-themed visual below.

After dabbling in electronica on 2016’s Starboy and fully embracing his alt-sensibility on 2018’s My Dear Melancholy, The Weeknd returns to the druggy, excess-fueled sound of Beauty Behind The Madness on “Heartless.” In theory, that sounds like a good idea (because that album is incredible), but there’s something depressingly familiar about this record. “Never need a bitch, I’m what a bitch need,” Abel Tesfaye begins the song charmlessly. “Tryna find the one that can fix me.” Lovely.

The song bursts to life on the chorus. “Why? ‘Cause I’m heartless and I’m back to my ways ’cause I’m heartless,” The Weeknd sings in his trademark falsetto over beats courtesy of Illangelo and Metro Boomin. “All this money and this pain got me heartless, low life for life ’cause I’m heartless.” We get it. Being rich and famous must be tough. To the R&B superstar’s credit, there is a twist towards the end of the song. “I lost my heart and my mind, I try to always do right,” he belts on the bridge. “I thought I lost you this time, you just came back in my life.”

It turns out The Weeknd’s misery and bad behavior was heartache-induced. Aww. Listen to the lead single from the Canadian’s fourth studio album below. “Heartless” is already number on iTunes and racking up huge numbers on streaming platforms, so expect this to make a very impressive debut on the Billboard Hot 100 next week.
