Paul McCartney surprised the crowd at Lollapalooza last night (July 31) when he kicked off a Beatles classic, 1965’s “We Can Work It Out,” with Rihanna‘s “FourFiveSeconds.”

McCartney hasn’t performed this song, also featuring Kanye West, since its live debut at the 2015 Grammys. But in this context, where people expect him to do solo and Beatles classics, the lead #R8 single made total sense. Suddenly, “FourFiveSeconds” sounds lifted from the same era as “We Can Work It Out” — a time when optimistic, hopeful folk-rock dominated the airwaves.

That wasn’t the only instance during McCartney’s set where the past and present collided. Later, he brought out Brittany Howard of Alabama Shakes (above), whose sophomore album Sound and Color hit No. 1 this past spring. Together they sang “Get Back,” off the Beatles’ 1970 album Let It Be. And Howard fit right in, unleashing powerful vocals that seemed to invigorate the famed rock musician.
