Sofi Tukker’s Demented “Johny” Is a Fitting Follow-Up To “Drinkee”

Sofi Tukker’s “Drinkee” was one of my favorite singles of 2016. Sounding like the lovechild of Chris Isaak and Kiiara, the twisted banger sounded completely original and yet fit perfectly into the year’s anything-goes soundscape. It wasn’t pop as we know it, but it was still… kind of pop! The New York duo, comprised of Sophie Hawley-Weld and Tucker Halpern, fleshed out their sound further on impressive debut EP, Soft Animals, and landed another viral hit with “Awoo.”

The provocateurs return today (January 20) with a new single called “Johny” and it picks up where “Drinkee” left off with its Portuguese lyrics, jungle beats and Spanish guitar licks. Like their breakthrough hit, “Johny” makes you feel like you’re on your fifth shot of tequila. Which is as enjoyable as it cost-effective. I still think “Drinkee” has a lot of radio potential, but this could work too. It’s catchy and fresh — and that’s got to count for something, right? Listen to Sofi Tukker’s latest below.
