A Birthday Treat! Halsey Drops Her New Song “clementine”

Halsey is celebrating her birthday by giving us a gift. Today (September 29), the hitmaker turned 25. And at the stroke of midnight she dropped a song called “clementine” off her upcoming album Manic. Produced by John Cunningham, it’s a bit of a departure from the anthemic pop of “Graveyard.” The track finds her at her most poetic over sparse keys. “I’d like to tell you that my sky’s not blue. It’s violent rain. And in my world, the people on the street don’t know my name,” she sings on the opening lines.

“In my world I’m seven feet tall. And the boys always call, and the girls do, too. Because in my world, I’m constantly, constantly having a breakthrough… Or a breakdown, or a blackout.” That leads into the conflicted chorus. “‘Cause I don’t need anyone. I don’t need anyone. I just need everyone and then some,” Halsey declares. That’s not all. The “Without Me” chart-topper paired it with a video directed by Dani Vitale and Anton Tammi. In it, she and her brother Sevian Frangipane execute choreography courtesy of Dani Vitale.

Here’s the best part: It all goes down in an aquarium. Although this doesn’t exactly scream radio hit (that’s what “Graveyard” is for), the song does have me even more excited for the rest of Manic. It’s pretty clear at this point that the album houses some very personal music. And everything we’ve heard thus far has been excellent. Things are coming together quickly for Halsey right now. Last week she also announced the first string of dates for a world tour next year. Check those out here and press play on “clementine” below.
