Today (August 29) would have been Michael Jackson‘s 56th birthday. It boggles the mind to think what treasures the King of Pop could have created if he were still alive but his legacy is so incredibly vast that there’s always something new to discover. To celebrate the life of the gloved genius, I’ve put together a list of five singles that performed considerably better overseas than at home.
It’s hard to fathom how classic tracks like 1995′s environmental awareness-raising “Earth Song” could be the highest-selling MJ single of all time in the UK but not chart on the Billboard Hot 100. That has a lot to do with the way charts were compiled in the ’90s and the lack of a physical release but it still feels completely wrong. Discover over such cases after the jump. More »
Just when you thought Beyonce would slay the MTV Video Music Awards and then disappear until it’s time to collect her next batch of Grammys, the game-changing diva posed for CR Fashion Book and even wrote them a poem. Shot by Pierre Debusschere (he also helmed her stunning “Mine” video) and styled by Carine Roitfeld, the shoot is one of Bey’s best. Hell, she even has a Chanel surfboard strapped to her back in one pic!
The issue arrives on September 4 (a date which also happens to be Queen Bey’s 33rd birthday), so the shoot chronicles her life and career. There are references to her self-titled album, music videos and even past photo shoots. As for the commentary? Well, Beyonce writes about Blue Ivy and the inspiration she gets from children in general.
“There’s someone, we all find out soon, more important than ourselves to lose,” she muses. “I feel a deep bond with young children — all those photos in my dressing room — especially those who’ve been stricken. Children I’ve met across the years — they uplift me like pieces of moon and guide me, whispering in my ear.” How lovely. Peruse all the pics up top. More »
Bless Miley Cyrus. Just when things were starting to get a little dull on the interwebs, the retired twerker posed nude for V magazine and gave gossip hounds and perverts a reason for living. She can now add humanitarian to her long list of accomplishments! So far we’ve seen the (fairly tame) cover and a censored black-and-white nude but more pics are finally emerging from the Karl Lagerfeld-helmed shoot.
In one new pic, the 21-year-old rocks a bath robe and thigh-high boxing boots. In another, Miley holds a mouth-shaped purse against her vagina. It’s basically the high-fashion equivalent of her infamous Terry Richardson shoot. If you’re wondering why the hitmaker is posing nude again, your guess is as good as mine. It’s not like she’s actively promoting Bangerz (that fourth single is long overdue), so I guess the pop princess is basically losing her clothes for shits and giggles at this point. Rock on! Kylie Minogue staged one of the most impressive career reinventions of all time when “Confide In Me” dropped on this day (August 29) in 1994. After releasing four massively successful albums of (glorious) bubblegum pop, the Australian diva switched labels and reemerged with a haunting Brothers In Rhythm-produced indie-pop anthem that still seethes and seduces 20 years later.
Despite the startling change of genre, “Confide In Me” was an instant hit. It became the pop icon’s first number one record in Australia since 1988 and landed at number two on the UK chart. It even managed to find an audience in the US — reaching number 39 on the Billboard Club Chart. More importantly, the song finally showcased Kylie’s vocal ability (there was genuine surprise that she could, you know, actually sing) and established her as a credible artist.
To celebrate the 20th anniversary of “Confide In Me”, Steve Anderson (one half of Brothers In Rhythm) shared some secrets about the recording process on Twitter. For starters, did you know that there’s a gated didgeridoo in the “stick or twist” breakdown? Mind blown! He also posted the original lyric sheet (above) and revealed that the much-loved B-side “If You Don’t Love Me” was recorded in one take. Learn all these is to know about the classic hit after the jump. More »
Lana Del Rey‘s Fashion cover arrived way back in July (along with a portion of the accompanying interview) but more pictures from the glamorous shoot have finally surfaced online. After presenting a more casual, low-key look for most of the Ultraviolence era, it’s great to see the 29-year-old all dolled up again. It’s like a mini-Born To Die revival.
The 10-page spread (where are the other pics?) appears to be have been photographed in an old mansion or elegant country house. There’s a smoldering pic of Lana grasping a bedpost and a couple of her posing outside against stone walls. She looks amazing in all of them but the snap of her rocking the royal blue cape from the cover wins. See it for yourself after the jump. More »
:: Shakira is pregnant with her second child. The Colombian diva broke the news on her Facebook page, saying: “Yes, we are expecting our second baby!!” Congratulations! [Billboard]
:: Aww this would have been fun. Kylie Minogue has denied rumors that she is returning to Neighbours (the show that launched her career in the ’80s) for their 30th anniversary. [Digital Spy]
:: John Lennon‘s killer Mark David Chapman apologized for the crime during a recent parole hearing. “I am sorry for being such an idiot and choosing the wrong way for glory,” he told the three-person panel. [NME]
:: They say wisdom comes with age. Damon Dash has apologized for pouring champagne over women in Jay Z‘s “Big Pimpin’” video 20 years ago. Better late than never! [Spin]

Miley Cyrus recently posed nude for V magazine and the world makes sense again. I mean, there’s only so many scary selfies and semi-disturbing pet pig pics you can flick through without missing the diva’s scandalous unclothed antics of 2013. Earlier today (August 28) she posted a preview of the Karl Lagerfeld-helmed shoot but it was heavily censored. Happily, she just shared a more explicit version.
While the 21-year-old’s boobs are still covered, this time by well-placed smiley faces, it’s still fairly confronting. She looks gorgeous (and the bed of stuffed animals is a nice touch) but the uncensored image is going to be her raunchiest nude yet. Miley is currently riding high on praise for bringing a not quite homeless man to last weekend’s MTV VMAs. See the full picture after the jump. More »
Iggy Azalea turned down the chance to work on Ariana Grande‘s debut LP Yours Truly because she mistook the pint-sized diva for a child. “She reached out to me for her first album,” the “Fancy” hitmaker revealed in an interview with Grammy.com. “And I didn’t do it even though I thought she was amazing because I thought she was much younger than what she is.”
“When I realized she was so close to my age, I was like — wait you’re an adult!” the Australian rap queen continues. “I felt that my music was kind of so risque and I knew she had a Disney show… I didn’t feel it was appropriate but then I actually met her and I found out that she’s a grown-up and I was like ‘oh ok!’” The duo subsequently worked together on summer smash “Problem”, so all’s well that end’s well. Motherhood hasn’t mellowed Lil’ Kim one iota. The Queen Bee returned with a vengeance by scalping Nicki Minaj in scathing remixes of Beyonce‘s “***Flawless” and Rae Sremmurd‘s “No Flex Zone”. Today (August 28), she turns down the hate on a short — it only goes for 55 seconds! — but enjoyable overhaul of Iggy Azalea‘s summer smash “Fancy”.
“Fly girl I should have my own airline, Chanel belt couple thousand on my waistline,” Kim raps over that unmistakeable beat. “I might waste money but I don’t waste time.” It’s frustrating that she didn’t deliver a full remix because this is really cute. Hopefully Iggy appreciates the love and invites the hip-hop legend to join her on a new song in the not-too-distant future. Listen after the jump. More »
If you’re still mourning the loss of dance legends LMFAO (and, let’s face it, who isn’t?), new music from afro-toting frontman Redfoo is balm for the soul. “New Thang” is being promoted as the lead single from the 38-year-old’s debut LP — what does that make Australian chart-topper “Let’s Get Ridiculous”? — and features the talents of Sexy Sax Man.
Despite being the latest in an increasingly long line of “Talk Dirty”-inspired sax-heavy club anthems, Redfoo’s party jam is impossible to hate. (Feel free to try, though). The cheesy/amusing lyrics that made LMFAO’s music so much fun are present and the colorful video, which finds our hero putting moves on the ladies, is suitably irreverent. Watch up top. More »
