Pitbull is on a roll. The MC successfully hosted the American Music Awards on Sunday night (November 23) and immediately launched a promo blitz for new LP Globalization. Mr. Worldwide even had Lorde gushing. “I met pitbull backstage, felt this wave of his charisma and loveliness wash over me, probably not dissimilar to meeting the president,” she raved on Twitter. What’s next for the rap mogul? A killer performance of Dr. Luke-produced single “Time Of Our Lives” on Jimmy Kimmel Live.
There are much better songs on Globalization — check out Chris Brown-assisted earworm “Fun” or brilliant Bebe Rexha collaboration “This Is Not A Drill” — but “Time Of Our Lives” is slowly winning me over a little more with each live performance. Guest vocalist Ne-Yo did a typically incredible job with the song, while Pitbull was his usual ball of energy, bouncing around the stage like a mad man. See the suave fellas do their thing up top. Future Islands made the leap from indie-darlings to festival headliners in 2014 thanks to the synth-pop gem “Seasons (Waiting On You)” and one hell of a performance on the Late Show With David Letterman. (The fact that their fourth LP Singles is pretty much perfect also helped). The band is celebrating their banner by releasing a staggeringly good jazz remix (!) by avant garde trio BADBADNOTGOOD. And they are even giving it away for free.
“We all love the original version of the song, and we were honored to have the opportunity to try and remix it,” BADBADNOTGOOD bass play Chester Hansen says. “We heard Sam’s isolated singing and realized how soulful and emotive it was and seemed to sound the best was re-harmonizing the chords and taking it in a soul direction.” The process? “We came up with a slow groove for the verse that let the vocals breathe, and played the chorus double time to make it more powerful. After we laid down the rhythm track, we overdubbed guitar, keys and a bunch of other parts to fill it out. Take a listen after the jump. More »
After building a loyal cult following with club hits “Heartbreaker”, “La La” and the Dev-assisted “Danse”, Canadian dance diva Mia Martina is gearing up to release “HFH” (or “Heart Fucking Hurts”) as her debut US single. The expletive-filled break-up anthem represents a change of direction for the 29-year-old with its raw and emotional lyrics.
“When creating ‘HFH’, I wanted to capture exactly how you feel when someone you love hurts you,” Mia tells Idolator. “I think sometimes it is really hard to express those emotions verbally, so I wanted to create a song that everyone could relate to at some point in their life. That’s why I decided to release this song first in the U.S. — it expresses a feeling that many people have experienced and I want my fans to feel relatable to me and also get to know me on a personal level.”
The club queen kindly shared some pics from the set of the “HFH” video shoot and it looks very promising. Mia looks incredible, there are mask-clad cellists and a room plastered with graffiti. Check out our exclusive stills after the jump and get acquainted with the fiery gem. More »
Rap legends Salt-N-Pepa haven’t troubled the Billboard Hot 100 since the late ’90s when they scored hit after hit with hip-hop/pop classics “Shoop”, “Let’s Talk About Sex” and their iconic En Vogue collaboration “Whatta Man”, but the trio (I’m counting Spinderella) remains active on the live circuit — regularly performing shows around the world. They are also getting money from corporate America. Take their amusing appearance in a new commercial for Geico Insurance.
The ladies belt out their signature song “Push It” to random people trying to move (ie. push) objects. Salt-N-Pepa help people open doors and press buttons in elevators. Oh, and they also encourage a man to mow his lawn. It’s kind of corny but the femcees look incredible and it’s all in good fun. Who wouldn’t want these divas inspiring you to carry out every day tasks? Watch the soon-to-be viral video after the jump. More »
“How To Be A Supergirl” is the headline ASOS magazine chose for their Taylor Swift issue and it’s pretty apt given the mounting sales tally of new LP 1989. The “Shake It Off” diva’s cover story deserves an equally dazzling pictorial and photographer Ben Sullivan does a good job of capturing the 24-year-old at her most heroic and glamorous in a series of retro-inspired outfits. (She even pulls off the always difficult socks and heels combination. Respect!)
“When I’m getting dressed, it’s always based on what my friends will think,” the record-breaking blond told ASOS. “They are my number one priority and the opinions of girls are more important to me at this point in my life.” It’s been another big week for Taylor. She won the Dick Clark Award For Excellence at Sunday night’s (November 23) American Music Awards and held court from the front row. The former country queen will next appear at the Victoria’s Secret show on December 9. Peruse her pics up top. More »
Azealia Banks is giving away $10,000 for the best remix of “Chasing Time” as part of a new competition to promote debut LP Broke With Expensive Taste. The ’90s house-referencing floorfiller is already pretty hard to beat as far as club monsters go, so fans and producers — the comp is also open to professionals — really have their work cut out for them. One of the best overhauls to appear on SoundCloud belongs to veteran DJ Rich Morel.
The Boston-based producer is probably best-known for his work with electronic duo Deep Dish and for producing some of the best tracks (“Same Ol’ Story”,”Raging Storm” and “Set Your Heart”) on Cyndi Lauper‘s dance opus Bring Ya To The Brink. He strips the ’90s flourishes from “Chasing Time” and pumps up the BPM. What’s left is one hell of house anthem that is at least as good as Azealia’s original. Listen after the jump. More »
Bette Midler opened the library and read Ariana Grande like a book in a recent interview with The Telegraph. “It’s always surprising to see someone like Ariana Grande with that silly high voice, a very wholesome voice, slithering around on a couch… looking so ridiculous,” she said of the “Love Me Harder” diva, before declaring: “You don’t have to make a whore out of yourself to get ahead.” Ouch!
The 21-year-old finally responded today (November 25) with a passive aggressive tweet. “Bette was always a feminist who stood for women being able to do whatever the F they wanted without judgement!” she wrote. “Not sure where that Bette went but I want that sexy mermaid back!!! Always a fan no matter what my love.” Ariana also included a picture of the pop legend wearing a bikini as a little dig. See her tweet after the jump. More »
Selena Gomez clearly doesn’t believe in resting on your laurels. After generating an avalanche of praise for her emotional performance of “The Heart Wants What It Wants” at Sunday night’s (November 23) American Music Awards, the 22-year-old would be forgiven for taking a minute to soak up the triumph. Instead, she’s already in the studio working on her next album. And the baby-faced diva is using her current hit single as a reference point.
“It’s exciting for me to start off with something like ['The Heart Wants What It Wants']” she revealed in a radio interview. “And then start leading into writing about all the other things that are going on in my life and have gone on in the past year or so.” It’s obvious that Selena is taking a very different approach for her first project with Interscope Records. “I’m excited to put more of my heart and soul into the next chapter of music.” The LP, which is expected to drop mid-2015, is shaping up to be a blockbuster. Gwen Stefani‘s music comeback continues to gain momentum with news that she recorded a new song called “Shine” for the Paddington soundtrack with frequent collaborator Pharrell. “What a wonderful opportunity, as a parent, to contribute to something as classic, authentic and generational to all of our lives, as Paddington Bear,” the “Happy” hitmaker declared. The track is likely to be a US exclusive given that the film opened in the UK this week without it.
While we wait for “Shine” to drop, make sure you check out the duo’s other collaboration “Spark The Fire”. The zany hip-hop/pop anthem surfaced online over the weekend and Gwen teased the video during an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show yesterday (November 24). It’s nice to see the veteran diva is getting in some early promo. “Baby Don’t Lie” would have performed a lot better if it was supported by a couple of interviews and live performances. More »
K. Michelle can now add marketing genius to her resume. The sexy R&B diva is giving fans a signed, nude poster if you order Anybody Wanna Buy A Heart? (due December 9) from her website. She sits on a bed in the mostly black-and-white pic with only a bunch of strategically-placed red roses for coverage. (I really hope they got rid of the thorns). You better hurry because there’s only a limited number of posters and they are sure to go fast.
Apart from revolutionizing music promo, the 30-year-old bombshell dropped another brilliant buzz track called “Going Under” yesterday (November 24) and starred in Rick Ross‘ “If They Knew” video. She plays Teflon Don’s mistress in the clip and wears a sexy gold swimsuit. As expected, things get real when Rozay’s wife finds out. The Timbaland-produced collaboration is the latest single from the rapper’s Hood Billionaire LP. Watch it after the jump. More »
