It’s time to start engraving Vanessa Hudgens‘ name on a Tony Award! The triple threat is returning to her musical theatre roots by starring in an upcoming production of Gigi at the Kennedy Center. The role was made famous by Audrey Hepburn in a much-loved 1958 film, but the High School Musical sweetheart does a good job of channelling the iconic actress in a camp/fabulous promo video. She twirls and blows kisses like a boss. Watch it up top.
Hopefully, Vanessa’s stint treading the boards will inspire a full-time return to music. Or at least a new album. The 26-year-old has been concentrating on acting (she was robbed of an Oscar for Spring Breakers) of late but the diva still dabbles in (electro-)pop with girl group YLA. She has a hugely underrated discography — Identified is one of the most slept-on Disney albums of all time — and could inject some real attitude into the currently-rather-dreary pop world. More »
Santa knows that Miley Cyrus has been very naughty this year and, if he’s anything like us, he can’t get enough of her raunchy antics. The 22-year-old’s latest achievement? Making Christmas a much sexier time of year by putting her own unique spin on an elf costume. The Bangerz diva teamed fake ears with a tinsel wig and white thong. Which she proudly showed off while holding a water gun. Oh, and there’s a super dodgy pic where she’s perched on top of a car.
But there’s more! Miley was feeling particularly generous last night (December 21) and filmed a random topless video for fans. She wears pasties to cover her nipples but that’s about it. There’s no reason for the hitmaker’s bizarre home movie, but she doesn’t really need one. It’s been a wild year for the former teen queen, who posed nude as often as possible and spent a lot of time posting Instagram edits. See her latest social media artworks after the jump. More »
Azealia Banks opened a can of worms when she gave an emotional interview to Hot 97 expressing outrage at cultural appropriation in music. The femcee pointed the finger at Iggy Azalea as one of the main perpetrators, which inspired the Australian diva to tweet a lengthy rebuttal. Their beef went viral when hackers’ collective Anonymous entered the fray and threatened to leak images from the “Fancy” hitmaker’s alleged sextape.
Q-Tip then tried to explain the history of hip-hop in I-G-G-Y’s mentions and T.I. took it upon himself to respond on behalf of his protege. The latest hip-hop heavyweight to come out in support of Britney Spears‘ upcoming collaborator is Will.i.am. The Black Eyed Peas mastermind jumped on Twitter and shared some words of encouragement. “Hiphop Is global now…it doesn’t matter if your white or black…thanks for contributing & spreading our culture positively,” he wrote.
“Iggy Azalea [it] saddens me that people are making a big deal about race in hiphop & not ethics…today’s ethics goes against our foundation,” he continued. “In 1980 a white girl from punk rock group @blondieOFFICIAL helped #hiphop expand beyond the hood with a song called #rapture.” He also posted a video of Blondie‘s classic hit. His final message? “At the end of the day who cares what people think…do what you love…stay #fancy…#congrats.” See the tweets after the jump. More »
Aretha Franklin‘s comeback album might have sank without a trace, but the news isn’t all bad. For starters, the 72-year-old can add club queen to her resume! The enduring diva’s “Rolling In The Deep” cover topped Billboard’s Dance Club Songs countdown this week — making it her first number one on that chart in 16 years (her last was 1998′s “Here We Go Again”) and sixth in total.
The soul legend’s intense interpretation of Adele‘s anthem was first remixed by British DJs Cutmore and Wideboys, before a select bunch of American producers — Ralphi Rosario and dance collective Papercha$er — had a go. They’re all of lot of a fun and perhaps a reminder that it’s never too late to think outside the box. Maybe it’s time for Barbra Streisand to commission some club mixes to promote her mega-selling Partners LP? Listen to the aforementioned Papercha$er overhaul after the jump. More »
Another day, another flawless photo shoot from Jennifer Lopez. The “I Luh Ya Papi” diva recently showed off her killer curves in Self, before serving serious glamor on the cover of Latina magazine. She poses with The Boy Next Door actor Ryan Guzman (they co-star in the sexy thriller) in the stylish spread and reminds everyone that she is still/will forever be the sexiest woman on the planet.
New pics from the shoot have surfaced online and they are just as gorgeous. Jenny rocks a figure-hugging pink dress in one snap, while Ryan shows off his killer abs and tries not to drool. The “Booty” hitmaker wears a sheer dress with blue neck detail in another pic and closes her eyes as her co-star stares at her dreamily. He obviously can’t believe his luck that he not only got to make a movie with J.Lo but also got to serve as a handsome accessory in a fancy magazine. See all the pics up top. More »
Lady Gaga never sleeps. After wrapping up the ARTPOP era, Mother Monster moved straight on to Cheek To Cheek — her chart-topping duets album with jazz legend Tony Bennett. They have a mini-tour in early 2015, but it looks like the pop diva is already working on new music music. The “Applause” hitmaker recently spent some time in the studio with producer Nile Rodgers and songwriter Diane Warren.
“Gaga read and sang the chart perfectly,” the disco pioneer tweeted. “She killed it.” Diane was similarly full of praise: “Lady Gaga doing vocal exercises outsings just about any singer in pop music.” It’s all very exciting, but what exactly are these heavy-hitters working on? It could be new music for Gaga or a track for the upcoming Chic album, which Nile has been promising for a while now. Regardless, it’s a pretty exciting assembly of talent! Katy Perry just wrapped up the record-breaking Australia/New Zealand leg of her Prismatic world tour and is taking a little break before kicking off a string of European dates in February 2015. If you’re worried about suffering from withdrawals, never fear. The pop icon has just released a mini-documentary, Exposed, about the live extravaganza that takes you behind the scenes of her dazzling show.
The “Dark Horse” hitmaker explains the different segments of Prismatic, before passing the baton to opening act Ferras (the first artist she signed to her label). He takes us on a tour of Katy’s dressing room, where tour mascot/Instagram icon Butters is waiting. From there, the diva introduces us to key staff members like the production manager and head of wardrobe. It’s an exciting glimpse into the superhuman effort involved in putting the whole thing together. Watch up top. More »
Demi Lovato shut down a hater on Twitter this morning (December 19) faster than you can say “delete it fat.” The 22-year-old seemd out of sorts and cryptically tweeted: “Really sucks how expectant people can be these days.. Not need to cause a scene or be pushy.” It was unclear if she was talking about the media or overenthusiastic fans, but she sensed her comments would spark a reaction and added: “Cue the hate but idgaf.”
“Bitches be fickle as fuck,” she continued as the usual internet scum piped up, making offensive comments about her weight. (They obviously haven’t noticed how ridiculously hot she looks at the moment… but that really isn’t the point). “Shut up fatty dont choke on ur mcdonalds!” one hater waged before being scalped in one of the best Twitter comebacks in recent memory. See Demi’s iconic tweets after the jump. More »
That Taylor Swift juggernaut shows no sign of slowing down. According to chart predictions, 1989 should return to number one on the Billboard 200 next week — increasing its run to six non-consecutive weeks. (J.Cole‘s 2014 Forest Hills Drive briefly knocked it from the top spot with a massive opening bow). Pentatonix‘s mega-selling That’s Christmas To Me EP is predicted to fill the runner’s up slot. That means Nicki Minaj‘s much-hyped The Pinkprint will have to settle for a top five debut.
The femcee’s third album is expected to sell 160,000 copies in its first week of sale. (That doesn’t include streaming and individual downloads, which now count towards the chart). It’s healthy total, but easily the lowest of Nicki’s career. Pink Friday debuted with a whopping 375,000 copies in 2010, while Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded shifted 253,000 copies in 2012. Given the rap diva’s non-stop promotion and high-profile collaborators, you can’t help but think she will be disappointed by The Pinkprint‘s numbers. More »
The long-overdue return of The Veronicas was one of the more exciting pop developments of 2014. After years of label limbo, the Australian twins finally inked a new deal and didn’t waste any time dropping their third LP. The self-titled set has already produced one smash hit — “You Ruin Me” topped the charts in the duo’s homeland and became their first UK top 10 hit — and they look set to repeat the feat with “If You Love Someone.”
Another stellar DNA production, The Veronica’s new single is considerably more upbeat than soul-destroying ballad “You Ruin Me.” It’s not quite the furious pop/rock of “4Ever” and lacks the synths that made “Untouched” so memorable, but “If You Love Someone” is a radio-ready earworm with an instantly catchy chorus. The Tapehead-directed video finds Lisa and Jess starting a love revolution inside a warehouse. Watch up top. More »
