When it comes to breaking the internet, Beyonce is in a league of her own. After changing the way music is promoted and released forever with her pioneering visual album, the 33-year-old just made a mockery of your fave’s big budget videos by dropping a hilarious, do-it-yourself visual for “7/11″. Seriously, this looks like it was filmed on Queen Bey’s iPhone but it’s still hands down the best thing you will see today (November 21) or, quite possibly, ever.
The lead single from the diva’s Beyonce reissue is a divinely ratchet club-banger that left some dazed and confused by its furious production and crazy lyrics. (It’s too next level for basics). You’d expect the video to be an elaborate, choreography-heavy extravaganza, right? Nah. Bey made the video in a hotel room. She busts out some insane dance moves on the balcony — wearing no make-up, panties and baggy sweater — before indulging in some sexy bathroom twerking. She then gets wild with her girls in the hallway. It’s absolutely everything and you need to watch it now. More »
A couple of months ago, Made In Heights quietly dropped one of the best synth-pop anthems of 2014 with the gorgeous, multi-layered “Ghosts”. The L.A.-based duo switch gears on new single “Panther” — a lilting electro-lullaby that slowly unfolds after multiple listens — but it’s every bit as intoxicating as their last offering. At this rate, the pair’s sophomore set is going to be one of the must-hear albums of early 2015.
What makes “Panther” so special? It has a lot to do with the dreamy soundscape that producer Sabzi creates for Kelsey Bulkin‘s soft, breathy vocals. It’s a warm stream of synths, clicks and strings that lifts the track above your standard electronic fare. My only qualm is the title. Made In Heights make no reference to giant cats in the lyrics, which (let’s be real) would have made the song even better. Listen to the gem after the jump. More »
Cody Simpson is full of surprises. The Aussie star recently joined forces with Justin Bieber for mellow acoustic-pop anthem “Back To Mama” — the first taste of their upcoming duets LP — and now drops a surprise cover of Mr. Probz‘s breakthrough hit “Waves”. (The Dutchman’s worldwide smash finally broke into the top 20 of the Billboard Hot 100 this week). And it’s really, really good.
The 17-year-old strips the song right back for his acoustic remake, which is reminiscent of the original version of “Waves” before it got remixed by Robin Schulz. Cody shows off his ever-improving voice and the arrangement is very much on-point. It’s exciting to see the “Pretty Brown Eyes” hitmaker taking his career in a more organic, natural direction. One listen to The Acoustic Sessions is all you need to know that this is the right sound for him. Listen after the jump. More »
While most of the Hive is furiously pussy popping to new club bangers “7/11″ and “Ring Off”, the third new (but not really, at all) cut on the Platinum edition of Beyonce‘s pioneering visual album also surfaced online. If you can believe it or not, we finally have a finished studio version of “Standing On The Sun”. Unfortunately, it’s the Mr. Vegas remix that leaked more than a year ago — Bey can be so petty — but it’s been cleaned up a bit since then.
As much as I love the reggae-flavored overhaul, it doesn’t come close to the original. The Sia-penned, Greg Kurstin-produced anthem is the number one single/signature song that Beyonce couldn’t be bothered to release. That decision is still hard to fathom but at least the euphoric anthem is now officially part of the diva’s discography. Albeit in a somewhat diluted capacity. Bebe Rexha has the magic touch. When the 25-year-old isn’t working on her own amazing music (“I Can’t Stop Drinking About You” is one of the year’s best pop songs), she’s writing hits for other artists — Eminem and Rihanna‘s “The Monster” and Tinashe‘s “All Hands On Deck”, for starters — and featuring on massive tunes by artists like Cash Cash and David Guetta. Her latest achievement? Adding some feminine flair to Pitbull‘s new album.
The rising diva lends her distinctive pipes to “This Is Not A Drill” — the second really, really good song from Mr. Worldwide’s eighth LP Globalization. (The first is Chris Brown-assisted club banger “Fun”… actually, “Fireball” is pretty good too). A quirky trap-pop concoction, the anthem boasts the iconic lyric “I got that sweet D” and a monster chorus. “I don’t want wanna waste your time, big girls don’t cry wolf when they cry,” Bebe sings. “Someone’s gonna fall in love tonight, yeah we might fall in love tonight.” Listen after the jump. Taylor Swift is in Los Angeles for the American Music Awards on Sunday night (rumor is she’s opening the show) and took the opportunity to hang out with occasional BFF Selena Gomez and British electro-pop diva Ellie Goulding. They decided to have a girls night out and hit up The 1975‘s gig at the Hollywood Palladium. As expected, they all documented the get-together on their various Instagram accounts.
The “Blank Space” hitmaker posted a collage of photos as well as a video of her and Selena singing along to the band’s 2013 hit “The City”. Ellie also got in on the act, sharing a pic of the trio (above) on her Instagram. It’s going to be a busy couple of months for the pop princesses. Taylor is in full promo mode for chart-busting LP 1989, while Sel is gearing up to release her greatest hits package For You. As for the Brit? Her new album drops early next year. Iggy Azalea casually dropped a bombshell on Twitter last night (November 20) and then carried on with her latest tirade (this time about bootleg vinyl). The rap diva’s big revelation? That she has been working with the Queen of Las Vegas, Britney Spears. A fan asked if she would ever consider working with the most personal pop princess and she unexpectedly answered: “I did and it was amazing.”
When asked what came of the studio session, the “Beg For It” hitmaker held her tongue. “Can’t say anymore info about it,” she tweeted. This sounds like a no-brainer. Britney needs a hit and Iggy is hot enough at the minute to almost guarantee one — even if it’s simply via YouTube views like her feature on Jennifer Lopez‘s “Booty”. Which garnered the veteran pop queen a surprise top 20 hit. See the femcee’s tweets after the jump. More »
The already-long list of collaborators working on Madonna‘s 13th studio album now includes Nicki Minaj and SOPHIE, according to Diplo. We knew that the Queen of pop was spending time with the “Anaconda” femcee in New York recently but this is the first official confirmation that they are working on new music after their ill-fated/horrible collaborations on MDNA.
“Me and SOPHIE did a bunch of stuff together,” Diplo revealed in a recent interview. “We’re going to be releasing it. I did a record that was literally SOPHIE and Madonna and Nicki Minaj.” So, who is SOPHIE? One of the hottest electronic producers on the dance scene thanks to underground hits like “Bipp” and “Lemonade”. He (it’s a dude) is known for incorporating J-Pop and K-Pop influences into his super-cute bops. Throw Nicki and Lorde‘s nemesis into the mix, and things could get really crazy! More »
Pitbull‘s eighth studio LP Globalization drops November 24 but the MC’s collaboration with Chris Brown has arrived online a little early. And it’s actually rather great! An irresistible ’80s throwback, “Fun” pays tribute to Miami Sound Machine‘s exuberant Cuban-influenced pop with it’s hip-swinging Latin rhythms and perky percussion. Breezy’s Michael Jackson-channelling vocal is also something of a treat.
“Oh my my, lookin’ like a good good time, don’t disguise the way you wanna love tonight,” the “Loyal” hitmaker sings over what could well be a sample of Gloria Estefan & Co.’s 1985 hit “Conga”. “Oh my my, hook you with a brand new high, don’t be shy I just wanna live tonight”. That’s when Mr. Worldwide pops up for the briefest of verses before returning for an encore where he name checks Enrique Iglesias and raps about his glamorous lifestyle. Listen to the Globalization gem after the jump. More »
Just when you thought Eminem had sunk about as low as he could go by rapping about punching Lana Del Rey, the 42-year-old goes and records a song about wanting to rape Iggy Azalea. “Put that shit away Iggy, you don’t wanna blow that rape whistle on me,” he spits on Shady XV cut “Vegas”. “Scream! I love it!” Gross. Given her impressive track record or returning fire, it was only a matter of time before the Australian femcee replied and she fired off a trio of tweets addressing the controversy this morning (November 20).
“I’m bored of the old men threatening young women as entertainment trend,” Iggy began. “Much more interested in the young women getting $ trend.” She then brought up her younger brother, who is a fan of the veteran rapper. “It’s especially akward because my 14 year old brother is the biggest eminem fan and now the artist he admired says he wants to rape me. nice!” And for her final comment? “Women in music have the bigger balls anyhow we endure much more harassment and critic.” See her tweets after the jump.
