Avril Lavigne is breathing new life into “Head Above Water.” The lead single off her long-awaited sixth album has been something of an underrated gem. After arriving last year, it made some inroads on iTunes and climbed to number 64 on the Billboard Hot 100. Since then, the Canadian star has released a couple other singles. She’s allegedly now prepping “It Was In Me” as the next official release. However, today (August 30), we head back in time for a belated promotional push. Ahead of the launch of her new tour, she links up with co-writer Travis Clark for an official remix.

The new version stays very close to the original. The most noticeable changes include additional vocals from the We The Kings hitmaker. Avril opened up about the song’s creation in a press release. “Writing ‘Head Above Water’ with Travis Clark from We The Kings was such a beautiful experience,” she explained. “I started this song during a tough time battling Lyme disease a few years ago and thought my life was over. One night when I was starting to feel better, I had a party at my house and somehow Travis was there. I had never met him before. I found him on my piano and I just thought he was so unbelievably talented, and I asked him to finish the song with me.”

“We worked so hard on this track and were able to take my story and put it out in the world. I hope that my words in this song and our voices bring you hope faith light and strength and that you also are able to keep your head above the water.” She also shared a personal message for her collaborator. “Travis, I love you brother. You have been a blessing in my life. You sing like an angel.” Check out the reimagined version below.
