Cher paid tribute to Gregg Allman, the Southern rock pioneer who died May 27 at 69. She kept it brief. “I’ve tried. Words are impossible, Gui Gui,” she wrote on Twitter. “Forever, Chooch.”

Cher and Gregg were an unlikely pair when they met in 1975. She was a glamorous pop diva; he, a driving force behind the Allman Brothers. And in three short years (not to mention, just one year after Cher left Sonny Bono), they married, divorced and remarried before separating for the last time. They also recorded an album together billed under Allman and Woman, titled Two the Hard Way, though it was a commercial failure. Meanwhile Cher, like the Allman Brothers, had to also deal with Gregg’s escalating drug abuse.

Cher and Gregg finally split in 1978, after having one child together, Elijah Blue. But Cher still had fond memories of Gregg, even as she started to date Kiss frontman Gene Simmons. “Nobody ever made me feel as happy as Gregory did … he’s wonderful,” she said to PEOPLE that same year. “I don’t understand why he can’t see it. He’s the kindest, most gentle, loving husband and father. But then, he forgets and everything goes to shit.” Meanwhile, yesterday Cher took to Twitter to remember “funny, crazy, amazing Macon days.”

Gregg Allman had died in his home in Savannah, Georgia, after suffering “many health issues over the past several years,” according to an official statement. See Cher’s tribute below.
