Madonna Soars On 'I Rise'
The Queen of Pop shows a very different side of Madame X on 'I Rise.'

Madonna can do anything. After conquering reggaeton with “Medellín,” the Queen of pop rolled out a politically-charged ballad. The eye patch-wearing goddess is also skilled at blending pop and hip-hop. That’s the feat she pulls off on “Crave,” the third and (easily) most commercial cut from Madame X. Produced by Mike Dean and Billboard, the Swae Lee-assisted track is a sexy, mid-tempo groove. And if radio didn’t ignore Madonna’s entire existence, it would sound perfect on pop and rhythmic formats.

The construction of “Crave” is interesting. Madonna introduces the song with a loved-up verse and then she shares the chorus with the rapper. “‘Cause you’re the one I crave and my cravings get dangerous,” they sing. “The feelings never fade, I don’t think we should play with this.” Swae then makes his intentions clear. “You’re on me, I don’t think you should wait, you’re only one pull up away,” he spits. “You’re down to ride, ride me like a wave.” The duet evokes the Hard Candy era, but the tone here is mellower and more romantic.
