Rick Ross pushed back the release of Mastermind to 2014, but he’s using the extra time to build up unreasonably huge expectations, in classic Rozay fashion. Last night (December 10), Maybach Music Group’s official Twitter account said the album’s Jay Z collaboration, “The Devil Is A Lie,” is the “biggest record you’ll ever hear in your life.” Sure! (Jay appeared on the MMG honcho’s last album, along with Dr. Dre, on “3 Kings.” Never one to undersell a project, Ross teased that track by calling it a “masterpiece” and “the biggest collaboration in hip-hop.”)
Along with the caption was a link to the above artwork, which has a very DONDA/Love In The Future vibe, but it’s the work of DJ Sean Mac.

When you scan the Billboard 200 album chart positions this week, you won’t find Britney Spears‘ Britney Jean at #1. That spot belongs to country mainstay Garth Brooks, whose collection Blame It All On My Roots: Five Decades Of Influences sold 146,000 copies in its second week of release — enough to hop up from #3 to the top. The #2 and #3 positions seem to have eluded Britney as well, as they belong to previous chart-topper Midnight Memories by One Direction (117,000) and Kelly Clarkson‘s Wrapped In Red (112,000), respectively.
When all was said and done, Britney Jean sold 107,000 copies and thus comes in at #4, her lowest-charting album in the US to date. (Six of her previous seven albums debuted at #1, while 2007′s Blackout hit #2.)
The upside: At least the album didn’t fare as poorly here as it did overseas, where it debuted at #34 over the weekend on the UK album chart. The downside: Christina Aguilera‘s notorious 2010 flop Bionic entered the Billboard 200 at #3, and sold 3,000 more copies than Britney Jean did out of the gate. Are those bobbleheads we hear shrieking from somewhere in the distance? More »
It’s time for Kanye West‘s annual Bashing Of The Grammys, truly the most wonderful time of the year. During his Yeezus tour show in Phoenix, West addressed the fact that he only managed to score two Grammy nominations, which really is all kinds of bogus. “Yeezus is the top one or two album on every single list,” he told the crowd, “but only gets two nominations from the Grammys. What are they trying to say?”
It’s true: Yeezus has landed in the #1 spot of nearly every major list of 2013′s best albums: Rolling Stone, SPIN, EW, Stereogum, Complex, The A.V. Club and even freaking Time have him at #1 (He also made our top 10, at #4). And the LP isn’t just a critical darling: it debuted with 327,000 sales, at the time the year’s third-highest opening week.
That said, leaving Yeezus out of the Album of the Year category makes sense. The music is simply too confrontational and abrasive for that honor, which was the point of this album in the first place. West wanted to buck the mainstream. Well, this is what happens when you buck the mainstream. Kanye wants to have it both ways, because that’s his entire MO, and that’s why he’s so interesting/infuriating.
But the merits of Yeezus are incidental to this particular issue. More »
Norwegian singer Maya Vik will release her Lay Low EP on December 16, and ahead of that, Idolator is premiering the funky, synthy and altogether ghostly set in full. Vik herself lays her sensual vocals over “Lay Low,” the first cut, before guests like Dawn Richard, rappers Little Pain and Handerre Linni and crooner Morgan Phalen each take a crack at the same haunting track, all of them detailing the story arc of a winter romance, from its beginning to the inevitable end.
“Since my music usually leans more towards funk, I think it’s really fun to put out music that wouldn’t necessarily be a part of my live show, but is still related to what I do live,” Maya tells Idolator. She continues, “I really like the idea of putting out as much music as possible at this point. And I felt that this beat that I produced was something that I could take in so many different directions that I really didn’t want to choose one direction. So I asked some of my favorite artists at the moment, all very different, if they wanted to do a song on this beat, and this is the result.”

Last night (December 10) the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show finally aired, and it was one of those rare television events that a horny teenage dude could watch alongside his emo sister and their Top 40-obsessed mother, since Taylor Swift performed with Fall Out Boy to open things, as outrageously accessorized lingerie models stalked around them. Swift, decked out in an equally outrageous Union Jack costume with a tiny hat, joined the pop-rockers for “My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark (Light Em Up).” Watch her strut her stuff up top.
Taylor also stuck around for “I Knew You Were Trouble.” Catch that performance below. More »
Tuesday night (December 10) was a night of homecomings on The Voice, now that NBC is using “homecomings” to mean “nights where employed musicians were busy, so we let some former contestants perform and took them out to Red Lobster afterward in lieu of payment.” Even Monday night’s promise that coach Christina Aguilera would perform turned out to be a blatant lie, and that one loves performing this season!
Perhaps the performance lineup was just an effort to help viewers understand the deep disappointment the soon-to-be eliminated contestants would feel when they exited the stage for the last time. Or, again, all the actual working musicians other than Xtina, Adam Levine, Cee Lo and Blake Shelton were at the American Country Awards in Vegas Tuesday night. Either way. More »
Do you have “Royals” fatigue yet? If so, that’s understandable! But don’t let that prevent you from exploring the rest of Lorde‘s debut Pure Heroine, one of the year’s best albums. And don’t let that keep you from watching Jason Derulo‘s recent live cover of the hit for BBC 1′s Live Lounge.
The jacked Tattoos singer was reading the lyrics off an iPad, but that didn’t stop him from turning out a solid rendition, even adding his own twist during this rare male cover of the song: “You could call me King Bee.” Hate to break it to Jason, but things might get contentious if he runs into King B.

From the gloomy alt-pop leanings of Say Lou Lou to the club-rattling beats of Havana Brown, Australia keeps churning out great pop music. Joining the ever-growing list of talented Aussies is new duo Max & Bianca. They release their perky debut single “Love Drunk” on December 13.
Brought together by mutual friends, the Sydney-based duo play their own instruments and aspire to make quality pop music with substance. That’s a lofty goal but does “Love Drunk” achieve it? From the brief preview, the answer is a resounding yes. Produced by DNA, the fizzy pop tune sounds like a more melodic Karmin — with sugary sweet vocals and a bold, sing-a-long chorus.
“It’s all about a couple being in love, but everything has gone wrong and they don’t how to deal with it — or if they even want to,” Max explains. Catchy and deep! What more do you need? Listen to a snippet of the song in the band’s colorful video after the jump. More »
Beyonce is currently taking part in a 22 day vegan challenge but her new diet has done nothing to diminish her flawless physique — as proved by recent updates to her Tumblr. The 32-year-old’s gravity-defying curves are on full display as she poses in bikini bottoms and a football jersey.
It’s a smoking hot look, although the addition of a giraffe beanie in some pics is an acquired taste! Bey is currently celebrating her 46 Grammy nomination for Jay Z collab ” Part II (On The Run)”, so we can overlook her choice of headgear. More pics after the jump. More »
