Rita's 'Anywhere' Is A Delight
Rita Ora gets it very, very right with oddball new single 'Anywhere.'

Rita Ora’s Phoenix (out November 23) is shaping up to be one of the best pop albums of the year. There, I said it. While nothing has captured my attention to the same extent as 2017’s revelatory “Anywhere,” every song has been good. And “Velvet Rope” is no exception. Not a Janet Jackson cover, the Brit’s latest bop shows off her (underrated) vocals over rich, soulful production courtesy of RØMANS and Jimmy Napes. It also finds the hitmaker at her most vulnerable, as she tries to process an ill-fated romance.

“Where did it go, the love that we shared?” Rita ponders in the opening verse. “Guess we’ll never know, is it hidden behind that velvet rope?” The loosely-structured anthem really takes flight on the chorus. “Heard that you been living it up (living it up), where did I go wrong?” she belts. “Only yesterday you were beside me (beside me), now I’m just another one.” Ouch. It’s time to stop clowning the 27-year-old and admit that she’s one hell of a pop star. Listen to “Velvet Rope” below for further proof.
