Show A Little Respect

Aretha Franklin Sings The Great Diva Classics (due October 21) is a Clive Davis-curated covers album featuring tracks made famous by big-lunged female vocalists like Whitney Houston, Barbra Streisand and Adele. Sounds like a great fit for the Queen of Soul, right? Well, last night’s (September 29) performance on the Late Show With David Letterman might change your mind.

The 72-year-old bravely mashed Adele‘s “Rolling In The Deep” with “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” but it wasn’t exactly a triumph. In fact, the video immediately went viral — generating nasty comments about Aretha’s voice and appearance. Trolls even came for Whitney’s mother Cissy Houston, who sang backing vocals (out of time with the rest of the choir). This isn’t the R&B legend’s finest moment but her lower register was on fire. The high notes, however, are best left unmentioned. Watch up top. More »

Aretha Franklin Covers Adele, Whitney Houston & Alicia Keys On New Divas-Themed Concept Album

Aretha Franklin is releasing her 39th studio LP on September 30. Wait… what? The news comes as a surprise because the queen of soul is kind of ‘doing a Beyonce‘ — the album isn’t a total secret but details are heavily guarded. Clive Davis, who is overseeing production for Arista Records, did, however, shed some light on the tantalizing project for Billboard.

For starters, it’s a concept album. Aretha will cover classic songs by fellow divas including Adele, Whitney Houston, Barbra Streisand, Alicia Keys, Etta James and Diana Ross. “[The diva's] new album is purely and simply sensational,” Clive says of the unexpected opus. “She’s on fire and vocally in absolutely peak form. What a thrill to see this peerless artist still showing the way, still sending shivers up your spine, still demonstrating that all contemporary music needs right now is the voice.” My iPod is ready. Yes, Adele’s New Album Is Called ’25,’ According To The World Music Awards

News of Adele‘s third album has single-handedly made 2011′s “Rumour Has It” relevant again, and today’s tidbit is no exception. A recent tweet by the World Music Awards seems to confirm that, yes, Adele’s new album is titled 25, while announcing that, yes, she will tour in 2015 to support it. In fact, the awards show assumes that Adele had already made her album title known, while she’s merely hinted that it would fall in line with her first two efforts, 19 and 21.

So far, all Adele has confirmed is that actually, despite her past vocal complications, she does intend to tour for her third album. Thanks to interviews, fans also know who she’s approached for collaborations so far, including Phil Collins, Diane Warren and Ryan Tedder. (The OneRepublic frontman had worked with her on, you guessed it, “Rumour Has It.”) Daily Star has also reported that Adele was planning a surprise, Beyonce-style release for her third album, though while citing unnamed sources.

Important News: Katy Perry And Adele Took A Selfie Together

Katy Perry entertained a very special guest back-stage at last night’s (May 28) Prismatic concert in London. She hung out with Adele and even took a selfie with the mega-selling diva. “…And on the 2nd LDN show the Queen graced me with her presence,” wrote the “Dark Horse” songstress on her Instagram account. Awww!

Don’t they look adorable together? I hope they spontaneously decided to work together because I’m sick of waiting for a Beyonce-Adele collaboration to happen. Oh and in case you’re wondering, the Brit loved the show. She jumped on her Twitter account and informed fans that: “Katy Perry was supreme tonight!” It doesn’t get much better than her seal of approval. See their social media updates after the jump. Estelle Drags Adele, Says She Doesn’t Make Soul Music: “I Don’t Think Of Her And Think Of Aretha”

Another day, another beef. The latest diva to run her mouth is Estelle. She obviously holds something of a grudge against countrywoman Adele and took a swipe at her in a recent interview with Global Grind. “I don’t think of her and think of Aretha [Franklin],” the “American Boy” songstress said. “So to me, that’s not soul. She does great folk music.” Ouch.

She underlined her point by saying: “Don’t sell that to me as soul and tell me I have to co-sign it or endorse it.” Estelle makes a point. Adele has a soulful voice but her music could just as easily be described as pop, rock or blues. However, dismissing it as “folk” sounds like sour grapes. Perhaps the once-hot R&B singer is mad that she’s releasing borderline-pornographic videos to promote her mixtape, while 21 sold 10 million+ copies in America alone. Did Adele Just Tease Her Next Album ’25′?

Ladies and gentlemen, it would appear Adele has just teased her next album. Based on a tweet last night (May 4), her third LP may be called 25 and due for a release later this year. All this insight comes from a selfie, so selfies aren’t an entirely terrible phenomenon after all!

The British singer today celebrates her 26th birthday, and to mark the occasion she posted a photo on Twitter with the caption, “Bye bye 25… See you again later in the year.” The uninitiated (are there any left??) may wonder “what on Earth does that mean, ‘see 25 again?’” Well, it would imply 25 is the project’s title, which would follow her first two albums 19 and 21, both of which were named after her age at the time they were made.

OneRepublic’s “Love Runs Out” Sounds Like Kanye’s “Love Lockdown” & Adele’s “Rumour Has It”: Listen

Durable, Ryan Tedder-led pop outfit OneRepublic surprised fans today by re-releasing their third LP Native, which comes repacked with a few new tracks — chief among them: new single “Love Runs Out,” “Life In Color” and the Alesso vs. OneRepublic Remix of “If I Lose Myself.”

Last week a short snippet was made available for “Love Runs Out,” a song Tedder had apparently been kicking around for awhile, but ultimately discarded before the original version of Native was released last year, because the chorus didn’t come together just right. The tune now has said chorus, and, to be honest, it sounds mighty similar to that of Kanye West‘s 808s & Heartbreak smash “Love Lockdown.” Another past hit single “Love Runs Out” is reminiscent of: Adele‘s “Rumour Has It”…though, we’ll give Tedder a pass on that since he produced and co-wrote it. (There’s also the whole ’70s-era Rolling Stones rock & soul vibe that everyone seems to be jumping all over these days, but I digress.)

Compare OneRepublic’s new song to Kanye’s “Love Lockdown” and Adele’s “Rumour Has It” below, and see if your love for the band is locked down or just plain running out. More »
