Morning Mix: Was Demi Lovato Being Shady About Taylor Swift & Selena Gomez?

:: Demi Lovato knows how to throw some serious shade. In a recent radio interview, Demi said, “A lot of celebrities don’t open up to their fans, they don’t really tell them things that can benefit their lives, they just, you know, maybe flaunt around a boyfriend and sell a couple of albums. That’s not what my career is about.” Is someone still upset over the Selena Gomez/Taylor Swift sisterhood. [AOL Music]

Speaking at SXSW, the DJ said, “The songs sound the same, I’m surprised the record companies that sign these people aren’t just going home and making the music themselves.” Sounds like he’s getting tired of the overpopularized genre. Whatcha Say: The Oscars, Joan Rivers & Justin Bieber’s Weird Outfits Got Readers Talking

For an award show about movies, Sunday’s broadcast of the Academy Awards sure felt more like an ode to music this year–and it basically was! The long, long event was mercifully broken up by some truly showstopping performances in celebration of musicals, including performances by Barbra Streisand and Jennifer Hudson. But there were two performers that got you guys talking the most: Shirley Bassey and Adele.

Adele didn’t just make headlines at the Oscars — she also caught some flack from the always outspoken shock queen herself, Joan Rivers, which got you guys just a little riled up. And finally, Justin Bieber‘s curious sartorial choices as of late got you guys quipping like crazy on Facebook. But don’t worry — he’s probably too busy partying it up tonight for his birthday to notice. More »

Joan Rivers Made Fun Of Adele’s Weight On ‘Letterman’: Did She Cross The Line?

Look, we love Joan Rivers around these parts. She’s a national treasure, and she’s an old pro when it comes to crossing the line. In fact, she’s one of the best at making distasteful jokes. So when she appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman Tuesday night (February 26), in her post-Oscars celebrity-skewering wheelhouse, we knew things might get ugly. But, like, in a good way. Alas, Joanie decided to roll off a string of fat jokes about Adele. Didn’t she learn from the Melissa McCarthy “hippo” debacle?

All comedians know, if you’re gonna do the fat joke in this day and age, you better do it in a novel way. Joan Rivers did not do it in a novel way last night: “What is her song? ‘Rolling in the Deep’? She should add fried chicken.” You can just picture the drummer awaiting his cue for the rimshot. That was followed by, “She said, ‘My throat, my throat, I don’t know if I can swallow.’ And I said, ‘Oh, you can swallow.’” Comedy? Watch it below. More »

Oscars: Adele Is Adorable Even When She’s Talking About Conquering The World With An EGOT

With her Oscar win for “Skyfall” last night (February 24), Adele is halfway to Hollywood’s holy grail, that ever-elusive EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony). It was the first thing that came to our minds after her win, and apparently it was one of the first things on Adele’s mind as well. Billboard reports that during her press conference after nabbing Best Original Song, Adele said, “Maybe I’ll do an HBO special like Beyonce did…And a Tony, I’m not so sure. Maybe someday I’ll do a musical.” More »

Adele’s “Skyfall” Performance At The Oscars: Review Revue

Did The Critics Find Adele's Performance Oscar-Worthy?
Professional awards magnet Adele can now add an Oscar to her growing collection, after her win at last night’s Academy Awards for her James Bond theme “Skyfall.” And, believe it or not, this is the first time a 007 tune has won in the Best Original Song category!

At any rate, Adele also performed at the ceremony. Some critics were a bit nonplussed over the vocal mix, citing the fact that the London songstress’ pipes were drowned out by the orchestra. Still, most were in agreement that the singer herself brought her A game to the Academy’s big night. See our roundup of what the Internet had to say about Adele’s performance of “Skyfall” below. Oscars 2013: Adele Performs James Bond Theme “Skyfall,” Wins Best Original Song

Adele Skyfall "Oscars" 2013
The Sky Is Falling & We Love It
“Please welcome the unstoppable Adele,” actress Jennifer Lawrence said — and that introduction was apt. Backed by a string section and dozens of backup singers, Adele’s debut performance of “Skyfall” reestablished why the James Bond theme was nominated for Best Original Song.

Just two days prior at rehearsal, the British singer commented that the Dolby Theatre “might need to get a new reverb machine.” Prior to her performance, the Academy paid tribute to 50 years of James Bond films with a scenes montage and a show-stopping set by Shirley Bassey, the woman responsible for the franchise’s founding themes. But as “Skyfall” slowly built to a crescendo, Adele appeared completely calm and collected as she exercised remarkable control of every smoldering note. More »

Oscars 2013: Adele Makes Her Red Carpet Entrance

Finally the 2013 Academy Awards red carpet arrival that the pop faithful actually care about: Adele! The Oscar-nominated siren made her grand entrance at the Dolby Theater (anybody else nostalgic for the days when we said “Kodak Theater” though?) looking flawless in her black Burberry gown.

With every hair (and every false eyelash) perfectly in place, we have to admit we don’t mind one bit that the Brit returned to her signature awards-show color, black — especially after the vintage red dress she wore to the Grammys that had fans divided.  More »

Madonna Was The Highest-Paid Musician of 2012, Topping Bruce Springsteen, Justin Bieber

All hail the Material Girl! Madonna tops Billboard‘s annual Money Makers list this year, after pulling in $34.6 million dollars, almost all of which came from her blockbuster MDNA tour (93.5% to be exact). As music sales dwindle in the digital age and streams (which pay nano-cents on the dollar) become the main player, touring is ever more key to an artist’s financial success. Which is why in the No. 2 and 3 spots, respectively, you find Bruce Springsteen ($33.4M) and Roger Waters ($21.2M). According to the magazine, concerts accounted for 68.9% of revenue for the 40 artists on the list, with the Top 10 averaging 84.2%.

What’s interesting is the inverse relationship between touring and album sales. Older, established acts who no longer move units rake in loads of cash from their huge tours — just see the Top 3 above. But then newer acts on the list made most of their money from sales. For instance, Taylor Swift topped last year’s list, but she still made the cut this year (#15) despite having no US concert earnings in 2012. Adele also didn’t have touring revenue last year but landed at the 11th spot. Likewise, #39 Mumford & Sons and #33 Maroon 5 both made less than $1 million from touring. More »

BRIT Awards 2013: Winners List

We saw all the big-name arrivals across the pond at the BRIT Awards, but now for the actual hardware! Last year Adele and Ed Sheeran cleaned up, and this year it was another male-female duo dominating, with Emeli Sande and Ben Howard both winning two awards.

“This is a dream, really,” Sande said when accepting her Album of the Year prize. Otherwise, the Brits renewed their undying love for Lana Del Rey by giving her another trophy this year. Adele and Coldplay also came home with wins for the second straight year. Head below to see the full list of winners.  More »
