Alicia Keys Performs “Brand New Me” on ‘The Late Show With David Letterman’: Watch

Alicia Keys On David Letterman Interview "Brand New Me"
This Girl Is On Letterman
Alicia Keys has been, as we say in the industry, gettin’ that promo (note: that is not a thing anybody says in “the industry”) — and her latest stop was to The Late Show With David Letterman last night, where she sat down for a charming little interview before performing her new single, the Emeli Sande-penned ballad “Brand New Me.”

And, on the subject of a brand new me, Keys was rocking a new look last night. Those stripes? That hair? It was all just on point. As usual, her performance was lovely, even if it was at the snoozier end of the spectrum. Electrify us, Keys! Watch up top.

Alicia Keys Sued For Two Seconds Of Copyright Infringement In “Girl On Fire”

Alicia Keys is being sued for copyright infringement by songwriter Earl Shuman, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Shuman claims Keys’ hit song “Girl On Fire” repurposes part of the song “Hey There Lonely Girl,” which he co-wrote as a remake of his original 1962 song “Lonely Boy.”

Specifically, Shuman argues that a two-second snippet of the bridge, when Keys sings “She’s a lonely girl / And it’s a lonely world,” is lifted from “Lonely Girl.” Actually, Shuman didn’t argue that, a writer for Showbiz411 argued it in a November post noting the phrasing’s similarity. So Shuman is now building his defense around that one blogger’s keen ear. Even though in that very same post, said blogger incorrectly stated Shuman was dead. More »

Alicia Keys’ “Brand New Me” Video: See The Singer, Reborn

Alicia Keys "Brand New Me" Video
A Brand New Alicia!
Alicia Keys‘ video for her new single “Brand New Me” sees the singer back where she belongs: Right at her piano! Also, strolling elegantly through various sets and stages, but not doing a whole lot else. Hey, at least she’s not on fire anymore — somebody must have found the extinguisher. She was so inspired she even decided to liberate her hair, sporting impressively voluminous curls. Get it, girl.

The Diane Martel-directed clip is another classy visual for the songstress, whose latest LP Girl On Fire topped the album chart; whether this midtempo ballad has a shot at killing radio is a different question altogether. Watch up top.

Kanye West, Alicia Keys & Chris Martin Perform At ’12.12.12: The Concert For Sandy Relief’: Watch

Kanye West 12-12-12 Charity Concert
Yeezy x Sandy
Last night’s Hurricane Sandy telethon, 12.12.12: The Concert For Sandy Relief, was kind of insane, wasn’t it? Charity benefit concerts usually are, in their slapdash everything-but-the-kitchen-sink approach to talent, but this one leaned heavily toward classic rock (not our beat) — which made it even more curious (and awesome) when Kanye West delivered a 10-song set wearing a leather kilt that you probably can’t buy at DASH Miami. (Not that we’d try.)

But, well, the more the merrier, and they raised a ton of much-needed money for Hurricane Sandy relief efforts, so thanks, all the important rock artists of the last century! Also, Sky Ferreira was there answering phones, which is the opposite of everything being embarrassing. More »

After scolding the brawlers, she noticed that a girl near the fracas was crying, so Flo descended from the stage to hug her. One question: who the hell fights at a Florence concert? [TMZ]

Alicia Keys Wants To Shave Her Head: Morning Mix

Did You Hear?

:: Alicia Keys debuted her sleek, short haircut this summer in advance of Girl On Fire, and we loved it. But now the singer says she wants to go even shorter. When asked if she would ever go the Sinead O’Connor route and buzz it, she replied, “I’m thinking about something like that. I’m telling you. I’m going there. I’m doing it.” This is all Miley Cyrus‘s fault. [Billboard]

Pink Covers Alicia Keys’ “Girl On Fire” On The BBC: Listen

After performing on The X Factor UK on Sunday (December 2), Pink stopped by BBC Radio today and gave her British fans another treat, covering Alicia Keys‘ hit single “Girl On Fire.” Compared to Keys, Pink is a wild child, and she fittingly transformed the song into more of a rocking anthem, replacing the pianos with distorted guitars. We love Alicia’s original version and the Inferno Version, but now we’re hoping these two ladies will link up for an official Hot Pink version. Hear the cover after the jump. More »

Alicia Keys’ ‘Girl On Fire’: Album Review

The title of Alicia Keys‘ fifth album, Girl On Fire (out today, ), could really have gone to her 2001 debut (Songs in A Minor). In fact, Keys’ latest brings to mind her first-ever television appearance — on The Oprah Winfrey Show, no less — and how Keys prefaced her performance of “Fallin’” with a speedy rendition of Ludwig van Beethoven‘s “Für Elise,” proof of her classical training. It also brings to mind how her last words in “Fallin’” — that soft-yet-defiant, “Yeah, what,” was a first sign that Keys also bore a hip-hop edge.

Back then, Keys was a genre-bending newcomer, much like the collaborators she’s enlisted for Girl On Fire, including Jamie xx, Frank Ocean and Emeli Sande. What’s most exciting her latest offering is how Keys isn’t a girl, but rather a still-compelling veteran at age 31, this time veering mostly in the opposite direction of trends. More »
